Barton County Public Health announced 15 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total to 710.
The news was announced by the county’s Public Information Officer Donna Zimmerman at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 21, updating the last report from 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19. The number of COVID-19 related deaths remained unchanged at seven total, even though on Monday County Health Director Karen Winkelman warned she expects that number to go up pending confirmation from the attending physicians.
The number of active positive cases decreased by more than 50% between Monday and Wednesday, going from 147 to 70.
Wednesday’s new cases included six males and nine females; one resides in Claflin, 10 in Great Bend, one in Hoisington, one in Pawnee Rock and two in rural Barton County.
Barton County has issued 4,089 quarantine or isolation orders over the course of the pandemic and 410 of those are active, down from 745 on Monday.
There have been cases in 294 males and 416 males countywide.

As of 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, Kansas has confirmed 74,456 COVID-19 cases, resulting in 3,506 hospitalizations and 952 deaths. There were 1,488 new cases and 80 new deaths reported since Monday, Oct. 19.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment updated its statistics, including COVID-19 cluster locations, on Wednesday. These are locations that have five or more COVID-19 cases with symptom onset dates in the last 14 days.
A group living facility at Rosewood Services remained on the list with six cases in the last 14 days. The last onset date was Oct. 10.
Ellsworth Correctional Facility was on the list with 26 cases. The last onset date was Oct. 10.
KDHE also reports that Barton County has had 36 total hospitalizations, four more than last reported on Oct. 14, including its first admission in the 25-34-year-old age group. These include nine intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and five patients placed on mechanical ventilation, unchanged from the last report. There have been 21 discharged patients (+3 from last week). The age group of these patients is: 25-34 years, one; 45-54 years, four; 55-65 years, 12; 65-74 years, five; 85+ years, six.
Pawnee County has had eight total hospitalizations with one ICU admission and seven discharged patients. This represents one new admission in the 55-64-year age group and one new discharge.
