Friends of David H. Smith, a sergeant for the Barton County Sheriff’s Office who died April 2 after a long struggle with cancer, have planned a motorcade tribute set for 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

“We will be lining up down both sides of Patton Road from Bryant Funeral Home going north to pay respect to Sergeant Smith,” said Robert Bean, administrator of the Facebook page “Support Your Local Barton County Sheriff.” “We encourage all DARE graduates to take a few minutes and make a poster for David. Please be respectful of everyone’s safe space during this time.”

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Smith was the president of the DARE Association and a member of the Kansas Sheriff’s Association. He also ran the gun range at the sheriff’s office. “David Smith gave 31 years of his life to protect and serve the citizens of Barton County,” Bean wrote.

Smith’s obituary can be read on the Great Bend Tribune website or at www.bryantfh.net.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, April 6, 2020, at Bryant Funeral Home. Private family services will be held with Pastor Morita Truman presiding, due to restrictions and limitations set forth by the State of Kansas. All Law Enforcement personnel will gather in the funeral home parking lot to process for interment in the Great Bend Cemetery North.
