Norma “JoAnne” Elder

BISON — Norma “JoAnne” Elder, 90, Bison, Kan., died Monday, Sept. 28, 2020, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kan.

JoAnne was born March 9, 1930, in La Crosse, Kan., the daughter of Clyde Christopher and Elva Mae (Smith) Hall. She was a lifelong resident of Bison, Kan. A 1947 graduate of Bison Rural High School, Bison, Kan., she was a homemaker, and cosmetologist working for 20 years from her shop in her home. JoAnne helped her husband, Leonard, with the farm work. Although she disliked it, she was very good at it. But JoAnne was a seamstress from the get go. She owned and operated Elder’s Drapery in Bison, Kan., for 12 years prior to her retirement in 1995.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and Joy Club, all of Bison, Kan. She was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Hays Chapter #228, Hays, Kan., and a charter member of the Sunshine Unit Extension Club.

JoAnne enjoyed gardening, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

On Jan. 16, 1949, she married Leonard D. Elder at the United Methodist Church, Bison, Kan. He preceded her in death Oct. 13, 2007.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy M. Holopirek, and her husband, Rick, Bison, Kan., and Lori A. Collins, and her husband Charles, Omaha, Neb.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Dennis Elder; an infant daughter, Karen Marie Elder; and two sisters, Bonnie Schraeder, and LoRee Cooley.

Memorial service will be Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Bison, Kan., with Pastor Angie Vertz officiating. Inurnment will be in Lone Star Cemetery, Bison, Kan.

Social distancing is recommended. The church is requiring all service attendees to wear masks.
