The Jayhawk West title is in hand. Next on the list, a Region VI title.

The Barton baseball team will go in pursuit of the Region VI title and a trip to the NJCAA Championships beginning today on its home turf.

The Cougars will open Region VI play, also known as the Plains Region, today in a best 2-of-3 series against Labette.

Barton won the West while Labette finished eighth in the East. That puts the Cardinals on the road to Barton to open the postseason. The Cougars finished the regular season with a 39-16. Labette is 17-25.

The winner of that series will advance to Manhattan for an 8-team double elimination bracket next week. The winner of the Plains Region will advance to the JUCO Baseball World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

Barton and Labette will have the first pitch at 1 pm today. The two teams will also battle at 1 pm tomorrow with the third game set for Friday if needed.

Each of the top four seeds from the West and East host opening round best 2-of-3 matchups.

The Jayhawk East Champion, Cowley, brings the best record to the postseason. At 44-9, the Tigers are ranked 9th in the NJCAA. Cowley will host Seward County.

Colby and Cloud County finished tied for second in the West behind Barton. The two will host opening round matchups. Allen County (26-24) will travel to Colby (35-19) and Neosho County (24-31) will be at Cloud (35-15).

Butler is the final team from the West to host as the Grizzlies won a tie-breaker with Hutchinson for that fourth spot. Butler will host Coffeyville. Hutch will hit the road to take on Fort Scott.

Also hosting from the East is runner-up Kansas CIty Kansas and Johnson County. KCK (45-10) is ranked 17th and will host Pratt, the seventh seed from the West. Johnson will play host to Dodge.
