Going into its Jayhawk West contest Wednesday afternoon, the Barton men’s soccer team had the best record in the conference. But the Cougars were technically not in first place.

That technicality is no longer the case.

Barton moved into first place in the West no matter how you look at with its 5-0 win over Northwest Tech at the Barton Soccer Complex.

The Cougars are now 5-0-1 in the conference – the only unbeaten team. But it wasn’t until Barton picked up that fifth win for a total of 16 points in the standings did the Cougars surpassed Cloud County at the top. Barton is 9-1-1 on the year and ranked No. 17 in the country.

Cloud is 5-1 with its only loss to coming to Barton for 15 points – a number that led the West until Wedneseday.

Dodge City, the team Barton tied with, is 4-1-1 after its win over Garden City Wednesday. Dodge lost to Cloud.

In the win over Northwest Tech, Barton held its opponent scoreless for the seventh time in its 11 games.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when Chris Camilli scored his first goal of the season. Camilli scored on Damia Viader’s corner kick.

Tevin Rochester added a pair of goals before intermission, scoring in the 22nd minute and the 43rd minute. Mario Magana picked up the assist on the first goal and Gabriel Arreas on the final goal of the half.

Arreas scored his team-leading and Jayhawk-leading 12th goal of the season midway through the second half and Colin Roemer added a goal in the 79th minute for the 4-0 final. Roemer had the assist on Arreas’ goal while Toranoske Abe picked up the assist on Roemer’s goal.

Barton is back on the road Saturday with a trip to Garden City. The Cougars beat the Broncbusters by a 2-0 score at Barton last week. Kickoff is set for 7 pm.

Garden City is next in line in the West after the three teams at the top of the standings. The Broncbusters are 3-3 in the West and 6-4 overall.
