Barton wraps up regular season with West runner-up finish

The Barton volleyball team put the finishes touches on the regular season with a straight set win over Garden City Friday night.
The win over the Broncbusters gave the Cougars a second place finish in the Jayhawk West. Barton closed out West play with a 13-3 record, tied with Colby for the second spot. Seward County, ranked No. 3 in the nation, won the West at 16-0.
Barton beat Garden, 25-13, 25-10, 25-21 and will head into post season play with a 23-11 overall record. Garden finishes the season in seventh in the West at 4-12 and is 7-28 overall.
The Cougars will take the No. 3 seed into Region VI play, hosting sixth seed Independence to start the playoffs. That match will be played Tuesday evening at 6:30 at the Barton Gym.
In the win over Garden City, Barton took the lead early in the first set and never was threatened. A 10-2 run gave the Cougars a 20-8 lead on the way to the win.
Things were similar in the second set as the Cougars went on a 10-3 run to take a 17-8 lead in another easy set victory.
Garden City did challenge Barton in the third set. The set was close throughout but Barton took control on a 7-3 run to take a 22-18 lead late in the set on the way to the straight set win.
Rayanne de Oliveira led Barton with 13 kills followed by Migle Mazurkeviciute with 11. Agnieksa Paskevic tallied 38 assists to pace the Cougars while Karina de Oliveira led Barton with 23 digs.
Barton and Indy will be one of four first round matches in the Region VI playoffs with the four winners moving on to Liberal for the Final Four and the right to advance to the NJCAA National Championships.

The Region VI event at Liberal will be Sunday with the NJCAA Championships taking place in Hutchinson starting Nov. 21.
