Barton freshman Guido Luna returns from the baseball at the Collin Super Six this past weekend in Texas. The 12th ranked Cougars went 3-0, including wins over two Top 20 teams.

ALLEN, Texas – What a difference a day can make. Weather-wise, that is.

The Barton men’s tennis team experienced that first hand at the Collin Super Six this past weekend in Texas.

Friday morning, the Cougars went head-to-head with No. 16 New Mexico Military in 70 degree weather in a battle of Top 20 teams. Barton, ranked No. 12, came away with a 6-3 win.

Later in the day, Barton had very little trouble with the University of the Southwest, winning by a 9-0 count.

Saturday, the cold front moved in and the Cougars battled with No. 13 Jacksonville, temperatures fell into the 30. But Barton wasn’t fazed, winning impressively by a 9-0 count once again.

“I felt good about our chances going into the weekend,” Coach Lyle Stickney said. “Our squad has really good depth and what some might lack in ability they certainly make up with effort. All of these guys are grinders and they all truly want to win.”

Barton dropped the No. 1 and 2 singles to New Mexico Military as well as the No. 1 doubles. The Cougars would not lose another match the rest of the weekend.

Guido Luna a 6-3, 6-4 match at No. 1 and Oswaldo Cano battled at No. 2 before losing in a tiebreaker. The other loss came at No. 1 doubles, where Barton’s duo of Sebastian Pino and Octavio Carrasco lost 8-1.

“I was not overly satisfied with our No. 1 doubles team’s chemistry, so we changed it up,” Coach Stickney said. “We sent out two new doubles teams and hopefully we have found the best pairings moving forward.”

That changed dropped Carrasco to No. 3 doubles to team with Tom Letecheur while Luna joined Pino at No. 1.

It worked like a charm.

The only real test against the University of the Southwest came at No. 1 singles where Luna went to a tiebreaker to win 1-6, 6-2, 10-7 over Jose Rendon.

“Guido (Luna) had a tendency to be a bit hard on himself when he’s not executing at a really high level,” Coach Stickney said. “He’s usually able to refocus and battle to a victory.”

Against No. 13 Jacksonville, the Cougars doubles teams had stellar outings. Luna and Pino won 8-4 at No. 1, Cano and Mariano Cabrera also won 8-4 at No. 2 while Carrasco and Letecheur captured No. 3 by an 8-3 count.

“They guys set the tone with three doubles wins then carried that momentum into their singles matches,” Coach Stickney said.

The only challenge at singles came at No. 3 where Pino won a tiebreaker against Andre Guedes, 7-6 (5), 0-6, 10-7 and No. 4 where Cabrera won 7-5, 6-4 over Daniel Toran.

Cabrera and Letecheur had perfect weekends, going 3-0 in both doubles and singles.

Barton will be back on the courts the first weekend in March at McPherson.
