COFFEYVILLE – It was a prime-time early season battle. A pair of Top 10 teams. Two teams that played at the NJCAA National Tournament last season.
But it wasn’t much of a game for long. It turned out Barton was more not ready for prime-time.
Coffeyville scored the first 10 points of the game and rolled Barton in Jayhawk Conference play at Nellis Hall in Coffeyville Wednesday night.
The No. 4 Red Ravens handed No. 9 Barton its first loss of the season with a 90-57 win.
The win improved Coffeyville to a perfect 3-0 in the Jayhawk Conference and 10-1 overall. The Red Ravens have now won six straight after a loss at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
Barton lost for the first time this year and is 1-1 and 10-1. Coffeyville now has as 11-point road win at No. 7 Hutchinson to go with the 33-point home win over No. 9 Barton and have established itself as the best team in the Jayhawk.
The 57 points were 20 points lower than than the previous low of 77 this season by Barton.
“We got off to a terrible start,” Coach Craig Fletchall said. “From there, we tried to go one-on-one and that is not the way to play.”
It was an uphill battle from the start after the Red Ravens jumped to the 10-0 lead.
Barton hung around, trailing 22-12 but an 8-0 run damped the Cougars comeback hopes. The lead hovered around 18 before another late run put the lead in the 20’s.
Barton had a chance to cut the lead 14 late in the half but a missed dunk followed by a 3-pointer from Tony Hutson made it a 43-24 lead with three minutes left in the half. That started a 7-0 run that gave the Red Ravens a 47-24 lead with two minutes left in the half.
By half, Coffeyville had a commanding 55-30 lead on the Cougars.
“Physically and mentally, we just weren’t very tough,” Coach Fletchall said. “That’s a good team. If we help on the drive they hit 3’s. If we don’t help they drive it and make shots. That is just the way the game went.”
The Cougars best run in the final 20 minutes came midway through the half that got the lead down to 69-51 at the media timeout with nine minutes left.
That would be the closest thing to any kind of threat the Cougars would make in the second half. Coffeyville responded by putting the hammer down the final eight minutes, outscoring Barton 21-6.
Leondre Washington was the lone Cougars to reach double figures with 14 points as the Cougars shot just 33 percent and made only 3-of-23 3-pointers.
Coffeyville put five in double figures led by Marvin Johnson with 21 points.
Barton will look to bounce back Saturday in the final home game of the first semester. Independence will come to the Barton Gym for a 7:30 pm tip.
