WICHTIA – It was just one week ago Barton and Cowley met up in the regular season finale in a battle of ranked teams.

Now those same two teams will do battle to be crowned Region VI men’s soccer champion.

Barton got there by knocking Jayhawk East champion Coffeyville out in the semifinals, 5-2. West champ Cowley had to work harder, going two overtimes before disposing of Dodge City, 4-3.

Now No. 19 Barton and No. 13 Cowley go at it for a third time.

So far, the teams have split. Cowley won 2-0 in late April on its home turf. Barton won that regular season finale, 3-1, on its home turf.

Sunday after at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, the rubber match will determine the Region VI champion.

The match will start at 5 pm and will follow the Barton women’s shot at a Region VI title as well.

The semifinal matchup between Barton and Coffeyville saw the Red Ravens score the game’s first and last goals but Barton sandwiched five in between.

Coffeyville led momentarily in the opening half, scoring in the 18th minute.

It didn’t take Barton long to respond.

Ivan Zuniga went low far post off a pass from Gabrielle Privitera less than five minutes later.

It took less than five minutes once again to put Barton on top.

This time Genildo Postimo scored his third goal of the season on a rebound off a Privitera shot.

That gave Barton a 1-0 lead 18:19 before halftime.

The match stayed a 2-1 through half and well into the second half.

Barton had some good chances to push the lead out to a pair of goals early in the second half but could not capitalize on them.

But the Cougars kept the pressure on and finally broke through in a big way.

Pasquale Degaetano put the Cougars up 3-1 with 26:46 left in the game. Degaetano went far post off an assist from Pedro Maximiano for some insurance.

Five minutes later the Cougars all but put the game on ice.

Once again it was Degaetano as the sophomore Scotland scored his first two goals of the season.

This time it was a rebound off a Vladyslav Peretyatko miss with 21:01 to play.

The lead grew to 5-1 when Privitera found the net with 10 minutes to play before Coffeyville added a late goal as well.
