Panther baseball primed for postseason run (DONE)
Great Bend's senior-dominated baseball team has determined its post-season fate in 1-one games the past two years.
Two years ago, the Panthers survived Hays High 3-1 and Andover 4-3 to qualify for the 5A state tournament for the first time since 2019.
Last year's promising season ended quickly when underdog Salina South ignited a post-season hot streak with a 5-4 extra-inning victory. The Panthers (18-8, 6-2 WAC) finished as WAC runner-up behind Hays.
"We needed a timely hit. When it's single elimination, you never what'll happen," Great Bend's Randy Beck, 15-year head coach. "Beck said. "We've been a low seed and played spoiler. That happened to us last year."
The Panthers are loaded with seniors primed for a high-level season on a team with quality pitching, efficient defense and a versatile offense.
Returning starters are two-time All-WAC P/CF Carson Umphres, first-team All-WAC LF Koehn Ribordy, first-team All-WAC 1B Ian Premer, C Owen Kaiser, first-team 3B Trenton Kern. Daxton Minton earned second-team honors.
Northeast Texas Community College recruit Umphres (6-3, 69 K in 572/3 IP) anchors the Panthers’ pitching keyed by a “heavy fastball." Hunter Herrman (5-3, 4.01 ERA), Kaiser (3-2, 4.30 ERA), Daxton Minton (3-0, 2.65 ERA) and southpaw Koehn Ribordy (1-0) compliment a crafty pitching staff.
"You've got to have extra pitching," Beck said. "You've got to try the next man up when a pitcher isn't having a good day."
The Panthers play Wichita Carroll, Hutchinson, McPherson, St. Thomas Aquinas and Gardner-Edgerton in non-league games.
"Our goal is win championships. The WAC is feasible," Beck said. "We play a tough schedule that prepares us for post-season."
The Panthers' lineup will include 1B Premer, 2B/3B Slade Mohr, SS Minton, 3B Trenton Kern, C Kaiser/Jaxon Wondra, CF/SS Umphres, 3B Herrman, OF Jace Schartz
Great Bend’s offense will mix power with old-school small-ball baseball featuring a solid running game.
"Our top guys can swing the bat and hit the ball hard," Beck said. "The more pitches you see, the better your timing is."
Beck said the Panthers are solid defensively around the diamond with reliable starters and dependable backups.
Great Bend owns state baseball titles in 1955, 1995 and 1998. The Panthers qualified for back-to-back state trips in 2018 and 2019.

Larned baseball reloads for CKL (DONE)
LARNED – The Larned/La Crosse baseball team (17-8) returns two quality pitchers – Carson Shaver (4-1) and Tristan Regan (1-0). Position starters returning as multi-year starters are 2B/C Deacon Martin, RF Tristan Regan, LF Mason Miller and C Carson Shaver.
In last year's 4A regional, Rose Hill scored six unearned runs to down Larned 8-2 in the 4A baseball regional. Larned managed two hits in the 7-inning affair. The Rockets took advantage of seven Larned errors, five walks and two hit batters. Rose Hill upset 2-time defending 4A state champion McPherson for a state berth.
The co-op program features La Crosse's Reece Morgan, Connor Spreier, Eli Morgan and Hunter Hobbs. Seven players who earned significant playing time last year are Carson Shaver, Deacon Martin, Mason Miller, Tristan Regan, Anthony Gonzalez, Reece Morgan and Andres Martinez
"Carson Shaver should have a big senior year on the mound and at the plate," said Larned coach Chad Erway. "Deacon Martin will be a pivotal player who will throw for us."
Erway projects Tristan Regan, Reece Morgan, Anthony Gonzalez and Mason Miller must provide a solid year on the mound for the Indians to be successful.
"There are some key skill positions that we will need to fill with the absence of last year's seniors," Erway said. "We are finding out who can settle into the middle infield positions. It's going to be competitive for players to be battling for three starting spots."
Pratt, Hesston and Haven headline the Central Kansas League contenders.
"We'll need to play beyond our ability and be mentally disciplined if we plan on competing in a tough CKL League," Erway said. "Pratt, Haven and Hesston will be solid baseball teams, but when you play in the CKL every game is tough. Many CKL teams make a run in postseason play."
The Larned baseball Indians surprised Chapman and Pratt to qualify for the 4A 2023 state baseball tournament. State champion McPherson beat Larned 8-3.

Cardinals make jump to 4A baseball (DONE)
HOISINGTON — Hoisington's baseball team will ride into 2025 after back-to-back state tournament appearances. The Cardinals' biggest challenge will be shifting to Class 4A post-season baseball which features 16 western teams.
The Cardinals (16-12) earned their first 3A state win in school history with a 3-1 victory over Sabetha after six first-round losses. Four starters return for coach Eric Steiner with all-stater Tony Moore graduating.
Topeka Hayden dropped the Cardinals 12-5 in the semifinals and Frontenac defeated Hoisington 5-4 in the third-place game. Preston Roat (5-3) was tagged with the loss in both games when Frontenac rallied for a pair of seventh-inning runs.
The Cardinals lost three starters when two key veterans didn't return to play baseball and standout pitcher Roat (5-3, 1.34 ERA) will miss the season with a wrist surgery.
"Our state tournament experience helps build your program," said Hoisington coach Steiner. "Our goal is to be competitive in the Central Kansas League, and learn from your regular-season games. Your ultimate goal is playing your best baseball in post-season play. The last two years we've accomplished that goal. We want to take advantage of our opportunities."
Steiner said the Cardinals strive to piece together a competitive offensive, defensive and pitching rotation together during the season.
"You've got to work hard and be prepared to trust in the process," he said. "You want your seniors to go out and compete and exhibit leadership."
Lane French (2-1, 3.81 ERA) will headline the pitching staff. P/LF French; 1B/RF Rhen Galla and C Marcus Ingram are multi-year starters. Other pitchers in the rotation are Galla, Kolter Hahn, Kaidenn Chambers, Aiden Hekele and Brodie Crites.
"It's every pitcher on deck when the season starts," Steiner said. "Early season, you want to see where your pitching rotation is. We have two guys Aiden Hekele and Brodie Crites who just started baseball practice that need to take time to get their arms in shape. Your end goal is to be ready for post-season play."
Top returning batting averages are Lane French (.385), and Marcus Ingram (.313).
For the second consecutive year, Hoisington shocked No. 1 seed Holcomb 10-4 at regionals. The Cardinals completed an identical upset 13-5 against No. 1 seed Hesston in 2023. The Cardinals dominated Cimarron/ Ingalls 13-2 to qualify for 3A state baseball for the second consecutive year. Roat (5-3) earned a regional victory against Cimarron-Ingalls. Moore (6-1) earned a victory against Holcomb 10-4.
In 2023, the Cardinals downed Beloit 7-3, Ellinwood 17-4 and 13-5 for the 3A regional championship.

Eagle golf features three veterans (DONE)
ELLINWOOD — Ellinwood's 35th-place Luke Heinz (178), 42nd-place Braden Lewis (185) and 51st-place Austin Brack (207) return from a runner-up 2A state finisher.
Ellinwood's 2A state champion Drew Heinz graduated after two runner-up finishes and a fourth-place medal. Also graduating were eighth-place Mason Moore and 26th place A.J. Bowyer. Three-time regional champion Ellinwood placed runner-up, third and sixth the past three years in 2A.
"Luke Heinz has the game, attitude and work ethic to improve," said Ellinwood coach Andrew Wittenberg, a 5-year assistant coach and 17-year Chase golf coach. "Luke should be the team leader in scoring."
Four-year starter Lewis will be the Eagles' No. 2 player.
"Braden improves each year and looks to continue that trend being a team leader," Wittenberg said. "After last season's success, he's ready to go."
Brack is the Eagles' third varsity veteran.
"Austin worked hard to earn regional and state experience," he said. "He'll continue to improve."
Zach Siefers has shown continued progress and will push for a varsity spot. Adam Hayes is a first year golfer who is learning to play consistent golf.
Former baseball player Austin Shinliver has good athletic ability and will vie for a varsity spot. Two-year player Keaton Lewis has invested time and made improvement. Freshman Xander Houseman is a newcomer.
Coach Wittenberg is optimistic the three varsity veterans will be helped by the younger players.
"It's safe to say, I've learned more about golf in the last four seasons from Coach Greg Maxwell than my previous years of coaching," Wittenberg said. "Coach Maxwell recreated a winning golf program and it's my responsibility to keep that going. Our expectations are to contend for a fourth straight regional title and qualify for 2A state golf at Turkey Creek."

LARNED — Larned will continue to compete in Class 3-1A tennis based on a 45% (4A) and 55% (3-1A) split.
Larned coach Mark Lessard is starting his 20th year assembling a squad that competes favorably in the Central Kansas League.

"Tristan Thompson and Troy Hemken saw extensive varsity action last year and will play a pivotal role in our lineup," said Lessard. "Tristan will start out at No. 1 singles. Troy will either play No. 2 singles or team for doubles with a younger player..
"Our lineup will likely change throughout the season based on player chemistry and competition," Lessard said. "The guys are working hard and have shown great improvement from last year. Our four freshmen come into high school with two years of middle school tennis experience. That'll be a big help."

Ellinwood baseball making progress (DONE)
ELLINWOOD — Veteran baseball coach Roger Ward was correct when he believed Ellinwood would turn its fortunes around last year.
The Eagles are making gradual progress.
Ellinwood started with a 4-13-1 record followed by 14-8 and 12-12 the past two seasons. Hays Thomas More Prep ended the Eagles' 2024 season with a hard-fought 14-8 victory.
"The guys know what to expect and how to go about business more each year," Ward said. "My first few years I had to be the 'bad guy' and instill it and it wasn’t always popular, but the message had to be clear. Now, our older guys prep the guys on expectations and lead them. It’s nice to see this. It’s hard to have eyes on 16 guys."
Ward sees the Eagles using their time wisely.
"We've got leadership, team pride and unity as well," he said. "Practices are conducted with more fluidity, that comes from being more confident players and knowing what we're trying to execute and accomplish. We've built somewhat of a baseball culture."
The lefthanded tandem of Trace Tudor (5-4) and Cooper Gunn (2-3) will anchor the pitching staff.
"Trace Tudor had a coming out party on the mound as a freshman," Ward said. "He led the team with five wins as a workhorse. He'll be better. He ended the season offensively on a very high note. All the tools are there. He’s a presence in the batter's box."
Catcher/first baseman Campbell Coleman (1-1) has recovered from a torn labrum.1B Tudor, CF Cooper Gunn, 2B Cohen Gunn, LF Gibson, Campbell Coleman and C Banks Jacobs are returning position players.
"Campbell Coleman should have a big year from his usual middle of the lineup," he said. "With Drake Hosman and Cohen Gunn hitting in front of him, he should have big RBI numbers.
"Drake Hosman will bolster us at shortstop. He'll be better at the top of the order. When he's on base, he'll a lot of pressure on defenses.
" Cohen Gunn batted over .300 as a freshman leading off. He was a pest to get out. He'll getting the pitch count up battling with 2 strikes. He’ll be a fixture on the mound from the left side."
Ward played baseball at Barton Community College and Kentucky and has coached the Great Bend Bat Cats for several years.

Ellinwood pitcher leads softball DONE
ELLINWOOD – After a 3-17 season, the Ellinwood softball team doubled its win total with a 6-17 record. The Eagles swept Ness City and Wichita Independent and split with Pratt Skyline and Russell.
The Eagles (6-17) nearly surprised Ellis at regionals, losing 10-8 after trailing 7-1. Ellinwood's Bennett Jacobs, Shyria Quintana delivered RBIs and Jacobs, Quintana and Kyndal Moore all scored on errors in the 2-run setback.
The Eagles feature multiple year starters in P Jacobs, SS Kennedy Behnke, 1B/OF Kyndal Moore; and 1B/DH Quintana. The Eagles will miss projected starters Addison Stickney and Reese Stickey with knee injuries. Several other starters elected to bypass the softball season.
Jacobs was the Eagles' No. 1 pitcher who threw all but 11/3 innings. Moore is working to prepare as the Eagles' backup pitcher.
"Bennett is a tough-minded pitcher who throws strikes and doesn't yield walks," said Ellinwood coach Brian Hosfelt. "Bennett stays calm and battles every game."
Jacobs' best attribute as a control pitcher is she makes the batters put the ball into play, which puts pressure on the defense to make plays. SS Behnke, 1B Quintana, 2B Moore and 3B MaKenna Bryant will start defensively.
"Bennett gets hit by the better teams we face," Hosfelt said. "She's an excellent fielder who would play shortstop if she wasn't throwing. When our infield makes the easy plays, we'll be fine. We made it tough at times with errors last year."
Jacobs, the Eagles' best contact hitter, will lead the lineup with Kennedy, Moore, Quintana and freshman Ali Gonzalez.
"We'll be fine offensively with several of our top hitters returning," Hosfelt said. "We've got some hitters with power."
After a challenging start against Hoisington and Hays Thomas Prep, Hosfelt believes he Eagles will be competitive.
"Our early schedule is tough, but our goal is to earn more wins than last year," he said. "We were in games we had chances to win,, but made errors that cost us. The girls fought hard and we played teams tough. Bennett Jaocbs will keep us close in games."

"We've got girls with talent who'll help our team," said Hoisington coach Dan Schmidt. "We've got younger athletes who will do well. We'll have competitive teams."
Bittel and fellow sprinter Reese Merlau will start the spring slowly while coming back from various injuries which have slowed their spring progress.
"Bittel is a hard worker, and Reese will have an outstanding year once she's gets going," Schmidt said.
Other top athletes are Neveah Graves (pole vault, javelin) and Kinley Wilkens (LJ, TJ).
State high jump 8th-place medalist and CKL champion Sofia Simic (4-10) and relay qualifier Kelsi Maier did not return for the girls.
"Sofia is a tremendous athlete who's looking long-range at her volleyball future," Schmidt said.
Sprinters Jason Robinson, Courtney Bryant and Brier Thompson and Missouri Western distance recruit Kamden Tarlton headline the boys team. Tarlton is a multi-year state cross country medalist and track state qualifier.
"Jason Robinson is a quality sprinter and jumper," Schmidt said. "Brier will run relays and hurdles. Bryant will run sprints, relays and jumps. We've got multi-sport athletes who compete in several events."
The Cardinals traditionally feature strong pole vault competitors. Multi-year state pole vault champions Shellamae Farmer and Josiah Ball graduated.

Somers leads Panther golfers (DONE)
Great Bend junior Ethan Somers caught fire by qualifying for 5A state golf with a season-best 83 at regionals. Somers carded a career best 81 at Newton's Sand Creek Station before shooting a 97 to finish 52nd at 178. Nash Lindberg (92) placed 32nd and Jacob Hall (104) placed 38th at 5A regionals.
"I'm happy for Ethan Somers," said Great Bend coach Steve Wolf. "He ended last season strong. He hit the ball really well, chipped it well and maybe left some shots out there. Ethan and Nash Lindberg invest time. They're serious about their games. Nash and Ethan drive to Colbert Hills in Manhattan to work with Great Bend graduate Kelby, who works there. Nash has been right there with Ethan. The skies the limit. I'm watching to see how they progress."
The Panthers feature eight sophomores and eight freshmen with a mix of athletic ability and golf experience.
"I'm happy we've got guys who want to learn to play golf," Wolf said. "We've got guys with potential. It's going to be competitive to even play junior varsity. Some of our freshman are multi-sport athletes, but lack golf experience. I'm excited to see them progress."
Wolf said freshman Alec Premer is the most promising newcomer with a smooth swing and intriguing potential.
Great Bend coach Steve Wolf and assistant Brandon Wells inherit a 25-player roster at the busy Lake Barton Golf Course, where Hoisington and Barton Community College players also practice during the week.
"It's tough with that many players vying for time," he said. "There's a lot of players on the course. We try and split nines when Hoisington is there. Assistant Brandon Wells and I provide instruction on the range and work with the short game. It's a challenge."
Wolf's next challenge is calculating a qualifying system to choose the top six players for the first varsity meets with an eye on finding the next six players for early-season junior varsity competition.

I sent you a Roster let me know if you got it. We will have 25 players with 4 of those players being from Lacrosse Reece Morgan,Connor Spreier,Eli Morgan and Hunter Hobbs. We will have 7 players that we will return that had significant playing time last year in Carson Shaver,Deacon Martin,Mason Miller,Tristan Regan,Anthony Gonzalez,Reece Morgan and Andres Martinez.
We will look for Carson Shaver to have a big senior year on the mound and at the plate. Senior Deacon Martin will be a pivotal player who will have to throw for us this year. Tristan Regan,Reece Morgan, Anthony Gonzalez and Mason Miller will need to have a solid year on the mound for us to be successful. There are some key skill positions that we will need to fill with the absence of last year's Seniors. We are currently trying to find who can settle in at the middle infield positions.
It's going to be competitive for players to be battling for 3 starting spots. We will need to play beyond our ability and be mentally disciplined if we plan on competing in a tough CKL League. Pratt,Haven and Hesston will all be solid but when you play in the CKL every game is tough with many teams making a run in postseason play the last few years .
