HOISINGTON 26, BELOIT 20

HOISINGTON  — Hoisington’s Holt Hanzlick scored three touchdowns as the No. 2 ranked Cardinals survived 26-20 against Beloit in 2A, District 8 football. Hanzlick scored on 1-and 7-yard runs and converted a 10-yard pass from quarterback Mason Haxton with eight seconds left in the first half.

Hanzlick was a defenive terror with six tackles and 10 tackles with two stops for losses. Logan Robinson contributed six tackles and five assists. Chase Robinson intercepted a pass.

The Cardinals (8-0, 5-0 District) will play Ellis (3-5) Oct. 31 in the 2A playoffs.

Hoisington failed to build momentum heading to the 2A playoffs. The Cardinals rushed for 164 yards, half of their average.  Beloit (2-6, 1-3) rushed for 160 yards and had 58 yards passing.

“Beloit played harder than we did, so a lot of credit goes to them,” said Hoisington coach Zach Baird. “It’s a lack of effort.”

Beloit quarterback Owen Eilert connected for touchdown passes to Brycn Corbett and Hunter Prohaska to keep the Trojans within one touchdown.

Cheney crushes Larned

BY BUDDY TABLER

Specia;l to the Tribune

CHENEY —  Undefeated Cheney moved their record to 8-0 Friday 48-22, claiming the championship of 3A District 8.

Larned (2-5, 1-3) travels to No. 1 ranked Andale (8-0) Oct. 31. fell to 2-5 but still claimed the number 4, and final, playoff berth in the District. Cheney will host Halstead on Friday in first-round playoff action while Larned will travel to Number-one-ranked Andale, the District 7 champion who knocked off previously undefeated Wichita Collegiate Friday 43-14.

Larned took the opening kickoff and mixed strong runs and timely passes to advance deep into Cheney territory but an interception by Logan Bartlett on the Cardinals’ 23 killed the drive. Cheney then put together a drive of their own that resulted in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Harrison Voth to Luke Grace and following a conversion kick the Cardinals had a 7-0 lead.

“That early interception really changed the momentum in the game, stated Larned coch Tad Remy. I thought we were going to score and grab the early lead and momentum but that changed things”, he added.

Larned answered quickly when quarterback Dillan Smith broke loose for a 55-yard touchdown run and Fernando Herrera toed through the kick and the game was tied 7-7.

Cheney posted 28 consecutive points to blunt any Larned upset hopes for a 35-7 halftime lead. Cheney benefitted from two first-half Larned turnovers, the interception and a blocked punt at Larned’s 33-yard line that was converted into points with 9 seconds remaining in the half on a 10-yard touchdown reception by Dayton Higgs from Harrison Voth.

Voth was a thorn for Larned all evening with his pinpoint  passing and scrambling ability. Numerous times he extended a play while escaping from defensive pressure and then finding an open receiver. Voth accounted for 223 yards of total offense with 40 yards rushing and 183 passing, accounting for five touchdowns.

After the first half onslaught Larned held Cheney on the Cardinals first possession of the second half and moved downfield behind a big pass to Gunner Cline and some nifty running by Andreus Tucker. With 8:04 remaining in the third quarter Tucker scampered 8 yards for a touchdown and Larned narrowed the gap to 35-14 but just three minutes later Cheney answered that score with a 7-yard touchdown run by Brody Hillman and the Cardinal fans sensed victory.

Larned coach Tad Remy said, “Cheney is a very good team and Voth is an outstanding quarterback. Our kids played hard and played well but the three turnovers really hurt us and then we had a few injuries that hurt.”

Larned played most of the fourth quarter without quarterback Dillan Smith who was hurt on an late hit. Jack Stelter took over at quarterback and directed Larned’s final touchdown. Stelter scored on a 20-yard run and a two-point conversion run with 2:48 remaining for the final 48-22 score.

Voth was outstanding for the Cardinals as he completed 16 of 27 passes to a bevy of talented receivers. Cheney posted 240 yards rushing and 214 yards passing in a balanced attack. Luke Grace caught 9 passes totaling 99 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Larned posted 189 yards rushing, led by Dillan Smith’s 81 and Andreus Tucker with 53 but Larned’s usually potent passing game struggled with only 151 yards as Smith and Stelter were under tremendous defensive pressure throughout the game. Smith was 7 of 11 for 101 yards and Jack Stelter was 3 of 5 for 50 yards.
