Central Plains girls, boys capture Russell basketball titles

The Central Plains boys and girls captured first place at the Amos Morris Basketball Classic at Russell.

CENTRAL PLAINS GIRLS 66, PHILLIPSBURG 19 (1ST) — Central Plains all-stater Emily Ryan scored 29 points with seven steals and six assists to spark the Oilers past the Panthers in the Amos Morris Basketball Classic. The five-time state champions have swept 88 consecutive games. The Oilers (4-0) play St. John at home Tuesday.

Avery Hurley scored 12 points and Rachel Lamatsch added nine points. The Oilers led 28-4 after one quarter and 46-10 at halftime. Oilers Emily Ryan, Avery Hurley and Delaney Rugan earned All-Tournament honors. 

Also named All-Tournament were Smith Center’s Bree Freiling and Gracen Hutchinson, Russell’s Tiffany Dortland and Megan Peeler, Ellsworth’s Lakyn Tenbrink, Plainville’s Aubrey Dewey and Phillipsburg’s Alexia Beach.

CENTRAL PLAINS BOYS 46, PHILLIPSBURG 27 (1ST) — Oiler Brett Liebl scored 17 points and Alex Hickel added 11 points as Central Plains downed Phillipsburg 46-27 in the Amos Morris Classic boys championship.  The Oilers (4-0) play St. John (4-0) at home Tuesday.

Oilers Devin Ryan, Alex Hickel, Brett Liebl and Myles Mengea earned All-Tournament honors.  

Also named All-Tournament were Phillipsburg’s Trey Sides, Ty Sides, Plainville;s Jared Casey, Smith Center’s Tallman Rentschler, Russell’s Austin Price, Taylor Whipple and Ellsworth’s Avery Haxton.

RUSSELL – Central Plains sharpshooters Myles Menges and Devin Ryan combined for 39 points and nine 3-pointers to spark the Oilers past Plainville 64-31 in the Amos Morris Classic semifinals. Menges scored 20 points and Ryan added 19 points.  

Central Plains (3-0) has won 29 consecutive basketball games. The Oilers will play Phillipsburg in Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. championship game.

RUSSELL – Central Plains all-stater Emily Ryan scored a season high 28 points with five assists and nine steals as the Oilers roared past Smith Center 57-26 in Thursday’s Amos Morris Basketball Tournament.

Oiler Avery Hurley added 16 points and Rachel Lamatsch contributed four steals and four assists.

Central Plains (3-0) has won 87 consecutive basketball games. The Oilers will play Phillipsburg in Saturday’s 6 p.m. championship game. The Oilers beat the Panthers 73-19 Monday night.

CENTRAL PLAINS BOYS 64, SMITH CENTER 34 — No. 1 1A Central Plains converted 10 3-pointers and placed three players in double figures to roll past Smith Center 64-34 in Tuesday’s Amos Morris Basketball Classic.

Brett Liebl (17), Alex Hickel (16) and Devin Ryan (15) scored in double figures. Ryan hit four 3-pointers and Hickel converted a trio of long-range shots. Smith Center’s Austin Hobelman scored 10 points. The Oilers play Plainville in Friday’s 5:45 p.m. semifinal.
