CLAFLIN — Central Plains freshman Peyton Ryan owns a 33-0 singles record and earned the No. 1 seed at the 3-1A state tennis championship Friday at Wichita’s Riverside Tennis Center.

Ryan’s closest match was an 8-6 pro-set victory over Smoky Valley’s 3A state qualifier Jake Lucas (28-5). What’s amazing is Ryan has won 117 consecutive games since his victory over Lucas April 27.

“I’m surprised I’ve won them all,” Ryan said. “But the record doesn’t mean too much. We certaintly were not expecting the No. 1 seed. But I’m feeling pretty good about my game. I’m sure the state tournament will be tough competition.”

Perennial 3-1A state champion Wichita Collegiate features Grant Ramsey (10-2) and Nick Grabon (15-4) in the singles bracket. Ryan owns two wins over Hesston’s Rhain Isaac (23-5), the 12th-place finisher from 2019.

Ryan plays a patient, mistake-free game that pressures the opponent to continue to keep the ball in play.

“I basically try to get my serve in (75%),” Ryan said. “I play my game from the baseline and don’t volley too much. I’m come into the net with a short ball. Probably, half the time I hit a winner and half the time, the other player misses a shot.”

The Oilers’ doubles team of Karter Beck/Michael Menges, Central Plains (21-13) captured a regional title and earn a second-round match.

Hoisington’s regional singles runner-up Evan Foltz (24-9) will play a second-round match Friday.

Hoisington’s Braden Mooney (23-11) draws Smoky Valley’s Jake Lucas (28-5) in singles.

In doubles, it’s Ellinwood’s Nathan Ringwald/Giovanni Battistoni, Ellinwood (15-9) versus Scott City’s Dylan Duff/Sage Stoecklein, Scott City (17-4); Hoisington’s Hunter Morris/Ryan Woydziak, Hoisington (23-8) versus Wichita Trinity’s Drew Bryant/Dillon Bryant (22-7) and Hoisington’s Mason Haxton/Chase Maier, Hoisington (13-16) against Wichita Trinity’s Sam Ralston/Matthew Draper (23-11).

WICHITA — Central Plains freshman Peyton Ryan lost to Rossville's Alex Sherer 6-0, 6-4 in Friday's quarterfinals at the 3-1A state tennis championship at the Riverside Tennis Center. Ryan (34-1) will play in Saturday's consolation bracket.

Hoisington's Ryan Foltz (24-11) and Braden Mooney (23-13) each lost two matches.

Central Plains' Karter Beck/Michael Menges (22-15) defeated Scott City's Dylan Duff/Sage Stoecklein 9-4 and finished 1-2.  Ellinwood's Nathan Ringwald/Giovanni Battistoni, Ellinwood (16-11) defeated Scott City's Dylan Duff/Sage Stoecklein 7-5, 7-5, then lost two matches.

Hoisington’s Hunter Morris/Ryan Woydziak, Hoisington (23-10) and Hoisington’s Mason Haxton/Chase Maier, Hoisington (13-18) finished with 0-2 records.
