Greenbacks power past Panthers

Four of five Great Bend’s state-ranked wrestlers earned victories in a hard-fought 46-27 dual loss against 4A Pratt High School. The Greenbacks picked up 18 bonus points on forfeits.

Greast Bend’s No. 5 ranked Wyatt Weber (138) rallied past Keishaune Thompson 8-4 with a takedown and near fall for a nice comeback victory.

No. 2 Kaden Spragis (106) pinned Maddox Riffey (1:52) and No. 6 Scott Heilman (170) pinned Bryce Winsor (1:01) for a pair of solid wins on pins. No. 6 Robby Gutierrez (120) picked up a forfeit win. Keyven Schroeder (195) pinned Pratt’s Enoch Walton (1:02) for another solid win.

The night’s toughest setback came when No. 6 Avery Wolf lost a late lead in a last-second 5-4 loss to No. 5 ranked Dalton Weber. Wolf edged Weber 9-7 in a wild match Saturday at Dodge City.

“Wolf beat him Saturday and we make a mistake and get put on our back and lose 5-4,” said Great Bend coach Nathan Broeckelman. “Honestly, I’m not really too happy. We didn’t wrestle as well as we wanted to. We dropped some matches that we definitely should not have lost.”

Another tough setback was Gage Reimer losing on a pin (2:34).

“Reimer is inexperienced, still knocking rust off,” Broeckelman said. “He’ll learn from it.”

The Great Bend boys compete at Wichita Kapaun-Mt. Carmel Saturday. The junior varsity competes at Hays.

PRATT GIRLS WIN — Great Bend’s girls won four of six contested matches, but lost 37-36 on a tiebreaker.  The Panthers earned two forfeit wins and Pratt earned four forfeits wins to gain the tiebreaker edge.

No. 1 Breanna Ridgeway pinned No. 4 Payton Woody (1:01) in the night’s matchup of state-ranked girls at 126 pounds. No. 6 Daizy Gomez (120) pinned Sierra Fox (2:24). No. 4 Lexi Deines (138) pinned Emmaline Primrose (1:47) and Jaydon Davis (132) pinned Alyssa Green (3:32).

“It was a good dual,” Broeckelman said. “We had six matches and won four. It’s disapponting to lose because some girls are putting in the work. Our girls need to get healthy and get their grades figured out.”
