STERLING –  Sterling Country Club featured 40-degree temperatures and a 25 mph north wind, creating a 32-degree chill index.

“Just the way we like it,” said Great Bend cross country coach Lyles Lashley, who saw his Panthers sweep Thursday’s team championships.

Medalist Mayra Ramirez broke the Panther school record (19:11.1) over the 5-kilometer course. Great Bend edged Buhler 41-42 after the Crusaders defeated perennial 5A contender St. Thomas Aquinas last week. Great Bend’s McKenna Esfeld was sixth medalist (19:30.3) and Emilia Diaz earned ninth medalist honors (19:34.4).

Ellinwood’s Erin Hammeke was runner-up (19:18.5).

Great Bend’s Sage Cauley (16:31.2) started a 3-4-5 finish followed by fourth-place Collin Hammond (16:33.2) and fifth place Kaiden Esfeld (16:34.4). Eighth-place Alex Smith (17:01.0) and ninth-place Evan Hammond (17:03.8) helped the Panthers place five runners in the top 10 medalists.

St. John’s A.J. Miller placed seventh (16:58.2).
