WICHITA – St. John’s championship trio defended their title in the 1A 3,200-meter relay at the state track championship.

The Tigers’ veterans Cashe McVey, Mason Osborne and Trey Fisher joined newcomer Eddy Calleros to first-place (8:23.9) in the 3,200-meter relay, a stunning 37 seconds better than regionals. The Tigers beat runner-up Olpe (8:32.52) by 81/2 seconds.

It marked a perfect finish for seniors McVey, Osborne and Calleros. Every runner performed their best race of the season on the state stage.

“It’s pretty special to win state titles in back-to-back years,” Fisher said. “That’s really hard to do.”

McVey punched through traffic to lead off with a solid start to give Calleros the lead.

“I ran my best 800 of the season,” McVey said. “I started strong going through. I finished strong. I’m so blessed to have my teammates on my team.”

Calleros was next up with the task of keeping the race close against runner-up Olpe Academy for the Tigers’ final two runners.

“I felt like that was my best time of the year,” Calleros said. “I had to stay with him. I wasn’t going to let him stretch it out.”

Osborne, St. John’s multi-sport standout, used his natural-born talent to overcome the lack of day-to-day track training after playing golf this spring. He handed Fisher the baton in first place.

“It went really good. I ran a smart race,” Osborne said. “The guy ahead of me started slowing down, so I passed him. It gave Trey confidence I had the lead. It gave me a boost when I held the lead.”

Fisher knew things were good when he held the lead.

“It meant the world to me that I could trust these guys to give me the lead,” Fisher said. “I got off to a great start and held them off. I always run hard that first lap and it’s gut-check time the second lap.”

Ellinwood’s Ashtin Klepper placed fourth in the 800 (2:25.09), improving 31/2 seconds. Erin Hammeke placed fifth in the 3,200 (12:28.59). Madison Ward finished fifth in the shot put (37-53/4) and discus (117-7).

Hoisington’s Samantha Colson placed fifth in the 300 hurdles (16.01).

Macksville’s Brook Smith finished fifth in the high jump (5-0). Pawnee Heights’ Dalton Hamby placed fifth in the shot put (46-21/2).

St. John’s Darby Smith finished fourth in the 1,600 (5:41.12). Erin Crissman placed fifth in the triple jump (34-71/2).
