Betty Irene Bishop

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Betty Irene Bishop of Oklahoma City passed away on Oct. 5, 2026.

Betty was born in Rush Center, Kan., on July 28, 1934, to Calvin Carlyle Kershner and Elma Lillian (King) Kershner. Her life was filled with family, love, hard work, and many wonderful adventures.

Betty met the love of her life, Glenn ‘Red’ Bishop, on a blind date. The two enjoyed dinner and a movie at a drive-in in Great Bend, Kan., and soon discovered they had found something special. They traveled to Raton, New Mexico, to be married. Along the way, Betty met Red’s parents in Pratt, Kan., and the couple purchased their wedding rings in Liberal, Kan.

For much of their early married life, Betty followed Red as his work in the oil fields took them to various communities in Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas. Wherever they lived, Betty created a home for their growing family. In 1978, they settled in Oklahoma.

Betty and Red were blessed with three children, Cindy, who was born on the Fourth of July; Randy, who was such a tiny baby that Red could hold him in one hand; and their youngest son, Doug. Family was always at the heart of Betty’s life. One especially meaningful moment came in 1979 when Doug and Red were baptized together, sharing a special moment of faith as father and son.

In 1986, Betty began working as an office manager for Dr. Parkhunt, where her natural ability to keep everything, and everyone, organized made her an invaluable part of the office.

Betty and Red enjoyed their retirement years together, traveling and making special memories. Among their adventures were trips to Alaska and later to Hawaii. After 59 wonderful years together, Betty lost her beloved Glenn when he passed away in 2015.

Betty is survived by her children Cynthia Bishop Tarron and her husband, William Tarron of Edmond, Okla., Randall Bishop and his wife, Kim Bishop of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Douglas Bishop and Julie Bishop of Oklahoma City, Okla. She is also survived by her brothers, Duane Kershner and his wife, Susan Kershner, of Roca Blanca, Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico, and Steven Kershner and his wife, Kelly Kershner, of Whitehouse, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Betty will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her strength, her caring nature, and the love she shared with those around her. Betty’s memory will live on in the hearts of the family and friends who knew and loved her.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Surrey Hills Baptist Church, 12421 North Mustang Road in Yukon, Oklahoma. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Betty’s name to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society at www.NationalMSSociety.org.
