HOISINGTON — Give Hoisington's home crowd props. They didn't start chanting, "I believe we will win," until the score was Hoisington 86, Larned 6.
The Cardinals led 38-0 after one quarter and 70-0 at halftime in the biggest margin of victory in Hoisington/Larned football history.
The 86 points was the most points scored by either team in the long-time rivalry. It marked the most points yielded in Larned football history, surpassing the 80-21 defeat to Beloit in 2011. The 70 first-half points yielded broke a Larned record.
Hoisington quarterback Mason Martin fine tuned the passing game with 130 yards and four touchdown passes in addition to 2- and 6-yard touchdown runs. Corbyn Holinde caught 2- and 9-yard touchdown passes. Brody Pfannenstiel caught a 55-yard scoring strike and Kolter Hahn grabbed a 38-yard scoring pass.
"Marty is super talented," said Hoisington football coach Zach Baird. "He continues to play better. We've had a blast with a great group of seniors. We're grateful for the senior group we've got."
Carson Mason scored on a 35-yard interception return. Peyton Lomas, Taylen Morales and Jhaydyn Turner added touchdown runs. The Cardinals rushed for 394 yards on 30 carries. Martin threw for 130 yards. Morales rushed for 88 yards. Pfannenstiel had 68 receiving yards.
Larned quarterback Mason Miller prevented a shutout with a 2-yard touchdown run. The Indians gained 91 yards.
With all cylinders clicking, Hoisington wasted little time in scoring its first touchdown. On Larned’s third offensive play,
Cardinal Logan Cossel intercepted a Mason Miller pass at Hoisington’s 45-yard line. On the next play, Cardinal quarterback Mason Martin connected on a 55-yard touchdown pass to Brody Pfannenstiel at the 10:43 mark and the route was on.
Hoisington’s stifling defense shut down all Larned offensive attempts over the next 21/2 quarters. The Cardinal offense was in high gear, scoring 38 first-quarter points. Larned's initial first down was halfway through the third quarter on a 7-yard pass completion from Miller to Tristan Regan. By that time, the Cardinals led 78-0.
Hoisington scored at the 8:12, 5:47, 4:52, 2:46 and 28-second marks of the first quarter for 38 points. The Hoisington passing game was a big factor in the big win as the Cardinals scored four touchdowns through the air.
Larned scored on Mason Miller's 1-yard touchdown, leaving the score 78-6.
Hoisington concluded the scoring on a 13-yard touchdown run by Peyton Lomas.
Hoisington's ball-hawking defense was led by Cossell, Kolter Hahn and Carson Mason with interceptions. Mason’s interception return for a score led to a 62-0 lead.
"I was pleased with our back-end defense," Baird said. "We got three interceptions and have gotten better. We're pleased with Logan Cossell, who plays everywhere back there."
No. 3 state ranked Hoisington (6-0, 3-0 District) plays Cimarron (4-3, 3-0) and Larned (0-7, 0-4) plays Lakin (2-4, 1-2) next week.
