The Great Bend Public Library’s exhibit of art by Charles B. Rogers, on loan from Barton Community College’s Shafer Art Gallery, ends Friday, Aug. 29, with a reception from 3-5 p.m. Members of the Shafer Gallery will also be present to discuss the artwork on display. Rogers was born in Great Bend. He was a noted painter, printmaker, craftsman and teacher.

Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! Thurday and Friday are your last chances to view the Charles B. Rogers Collection here at the library before it returns to the Shafer Art Gallery. Friday, August 29, stop by from 3-5 p.m. for our reception. Enjoy some snacks and a tasty beverage while you appreciate the art, and take advantage of this unique opportunity to speak with members of the Safer Art Gallery about the pieces on display. Don’t forget to check out the rest of the collection and many more amazing pieces from local artists at the Shafer Gallery.

Next week marks the start of September, or National Library Card Sign-Up Month. Have you lost your card? Maybe it’s seen better days and is barely holding itself together. In celebration of the occasion, we will be offering free library card replacements for the month of September.

We would like to remind everyone that we will be closed next Monday, September 1, in observance of Labor Day. Our regular business hours will resume the following day.

Even though summer will still be here for a little while longer, we’re ready to jump into our fall programming next Tuesday, starting with the return of Baby Bounce and Early Literacy Story Times at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., respectively. Baby Bounce is a time for parents and caregivers to engage babies ages 0-2 through lap reading, rhymes, music, and motion. Afterwards, we’ll move into tummy time and free play to allow parents to connect with other parents. Early Literacy Story Time is an active time for little learners ages 3-5 featuring early literacy skills, picture books, finger plays, songs, rhymes, music, art, and movement. Every child who comes to story time this fall will be entered in a drawing for a free book. Please note that, although our two story times are geared towards specific age groups, families may bring children of any age to the story time that fits their family and schedule best.

Tuesday afternoon from 4-5:30 p.m., teens grades 6-12 can join us in the Teen Spot for this month’s Teen Café, where we’ll be enjoying coffee and hot chocolate while designing our own Artist Trading Cards. Create miniature pieces of art that can be traded with artists around the world.

Join us in the evening on Thursday, September 4, at 6 p.m. for the return of Delicious Dishes. This month, we’ll learn how to put our own spin on popular recipes from some of your favorite restaurants. This class is open to all ages, but please note that attendees under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a responsible minder 16 or older.

Interested in trying out tabletop role-playing games but don’t know where to start? Players new and old grades 6-12 can try out our new Tabletop Teens miniseries this fall on select Fridays from 4-7:15 p.m. starting September 12. Enter the Nexus, an extradimensional warzone where fantasy and sci-fi collide. Six space-faring adventurers will have to work together to keep the Nexus from spiraling into chaos and being overrun by ... space jellyfish? Visit greatbendpl.info/teens for more details and to sign up for this miniseries. Those who don’t get a spot as a player will be put on the waitlist. Registration is required to play, but any teens are welcome to come watch as part of the audience.
