Spooky anime, treats for teens

Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! Today, after Genealogy Corner at 11 a.m., we have our Teen Manga & Anime Club. For October’s club meeting, we’ll be covering “The Case study of Vanitas” by Jun Mochizuki. “Rumors revolving around the Book of Vanitas, a clockwork grimoire of dubious reputation, draw Noé, a young vampire in search of a friend’s salvation, to Paris. What awaits him in the City of Flowers, however, is not long hours treading the pavement or rifling through dusty bookshops in search of the tome. Instead, his quarry comes to him ... in the arms of a man claiming to be a vampire doctor! Thrust into a conflict that threatens the peace between humans and vampires, will Noé cast in his lot with the curious and slightly unbalanced Vanitas and his quest to save vampirekind?” (Anime Planet) Afterwards, we’ll be making some macabre crafts perfect for spooky season! Copies of November’s title, “Fullmetal Alchemist,” by Hiromu Arakawa, will be available for pickup.

Saturday we’re hosting the annual Kiwanis costume drive on the library front lawn. From 10:30 a.m. to noon, browse through a selection of free Halloween costumes for all ages.

Starting next week, we have this season’s Friends of the Library Book Sale. Find books, movies, puzzles, and more at prices so low they’re practically a steal! We can accept cash, check, and Venmo. The sale will run Monday, Oct. 20, through Saturday, Oct. 25, during library hours.

Monday we have our next Digital Literacy class at the Senior Center. This time we are focusing on Internet safety. How to keep from getting scammed or taken advantage of online, how to create secure passwords, and more will be covered. If you are a senior looking to brush up on your computer skills consider joining us Monday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m.

Tuesday is another full day, starting off with Early Literacy Story Time at 10:30 a.m. and  Tech Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Get ready for our Tuesday of Terror movie and popcorn in the Teen Spot at 4 p.m. Join us for a spooktacular movie about the Spengler family’s return to team up with their predecessors, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an army of ghosts that casts a death chill upon the city, new and old hunters of the paranormal must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.

Then at 7 p.m. we will be discussing this month’s Open Book Club title, “Lone Women,” by Victor LaValle. “Adelaide Henry carries an enormous steamer trunk with her wherever she goes. It’s locked at all times. Because when the trunk opens, people around Adelaide start to disappear. The year is 1915, and Adelaide is in trouble. Her secret sin killed her parents, forcing her to flee California in a hellfire rush and make her way to Montana as a homesteader. Dragging the trunk with her at every stop, she will become one of the “lone women” taking advantage of the government’s offer of free land for those who can tame it – except that Adelaide isn’t alone. And the secret she’s tried so desperately to lock away might be the only thing that will help her survive the harsh territory.” If you want to join in on the discussion you can pick up your copy at the circulation desk.

Wednesday we have another computer class, this time at the Great Bend Public Library. Grab a sack lunch and stop by for our class on Online Shopping and Banking from noon to 1 pm.

After that at 3:30 p.m. it’s time for another Tweentober event. Too old for story time but not quite a teen yet? Get a chance to hang out in the Teen Spot this October! Each Wednesday, we will have a different teen program for tweens in grades 3-5 to try out. This time check out CreativiTweens: Ghouls Galore, where you can design and put together a ghostly garland to hang up for Halloween.

Next Thursday, Oct. 23, after Genealogy Corner at 11 a.m., it’s the teens turn to have a ghoulish good time with CreativiTeens. Alongside the garlands, we’ll also use air dry clay and paint to craft a fun piece inspired by Victoria Ashley’s ghost sculptures. After that Barton Community College will be here at 6 p.m. to teach a Keyboarding Basics Class. Boost your typing skills by learning proper finger placement, posture, and techniques to improve your speed and accuracy. This class is great for beginners or anyone wanting to build efficient typing habits for school, work, or personal use. And like all events at the library, it’s 100% free!
