Summer’s coming, and ‘Color Our World’ is our theme

Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! With spring right around the corner, that means our annual Summer Library Program is not far off either. This year’s collaborative theme is “Color Our World” in celebration of exploring the many ways art enriches our lives through its various forms. We hope to engage readers of all ages and inspire them to find their creativity this summer at the library!

Readers may be wondering, “How does the Summer Library Program benefit our community?” One of our patrons can help answer that question. As we wrapped up last summer’s events, we received the following testimonial from a local grandmother and retired English teacher: “(T)he Great Bend Summer Reading Program provides a safe, interest-based reading program that fills the void of school. My two granddaughters actually read together, taking turns, which may be the only time they get along well. I have seen the older granddaughter help teach the younger one phonics, sounding out new words and increasing her sister’s fluency. The activities for (Tween Scene) are so fun that the girls get excited to attend. We all so appreciate how enjoyable reading is – even during the summer!”

Kids aren’t the only ones who get excited for summer reading. Anyone who signs up and spends time reading during June and July gets the chance to turn those minutes into fabulous prizes! Along the way, the library offers a variety of events to attend, including movies, entertainers and presenters both fun and educational, an end-of-summer bash, and more. There is something for everyone, and the best part is that it is all available at no cost to our patrons.

Please keep in mind that, while we do not charge for events, we do have to cover the costs of bringing in great entertainers and providing materials for all of the activities we offer. The reality is that, without donations from our wonderful sponsors and community members, our summers would be dull and gray. If you are interested in helping make this year’s program as colorful, inspirational, and rewarding as it can be, consider donating today. We can accept cash, checks, and Venmo (@GB-Public-Library). For checks and Venmo donations, please note “Summer Library Program” in the memo or comment line. Thank you for supporting your local public library!

If you don’t want to wait until summer to come to the library, we have plenty of  upcoming events this week, starting with our usual Genealogy Thursday at 11 a.m. and Read to Luna at 3:30 p.m. Along with our standard Thursday events, it’s time for another round of Delicious Dishes. Join us at 6 p.m. this evening to explore egg substitutions in baking with our resident culinary expert, Miss Lisa!
