Greetings and Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day from the Great Bend Public Library! Did you know that you can learn to speak Pirate for free? Mango Languages is a language learning service that allows anyone with a State Library Card to start learning right from your computer or smartphone. If speaking like a swashbuckler doesn’t tickle your fancy, choose from over 70 languages offered through the app, such as Hebrew or Yiddish. Mango also offers English courses in 20 different languages for non-English speakers. Alongside language courses designed to help with your comprehension and learning of your new language, the service also offers foreign language films with learning modes and subtitle options.
If you’re looking to brush up on your linguistic skills and broaden your horizons, talk to a librarian today about getting started with Mango Languages.
As for upcoming library events, today is Thursday, which means along with Genealogy Thursday and Read to Luna, we also have Teen Manga & Anime Club from 5:30-7:45 p.m. For September’s meeting, we’ll watch and discuss “Skip and Loafer” by Misaki Takamatsu. Afterwards, we’ll learn about cultural and school festivals and play some games. Copies of October’s title, “Mob Psycho 100” by One, will be available for pickup.
Friday we have another teen event with our Teen Café. From 3:45 4:45 p.m., stop by the Teen Spot for a delicious cup of joe. While you’re here, upcycle plastic bottles into the perfect fox- or raccoon-shaped home for your new succulent.
Our Tuesday morning story times continue next week. Baby Bounce Story Time, geared toward children 2 years of age and younger, is from 9:30-10 a.m. Early Literacy Story Time, geared toward children ages 3 to 5, takes place from 10:30-11 a.m. Although our two story times are intended to engage specific age groups, families may bring children of any age to the story time that fits their family and schedule best.
Next Wednesday we have a special Banned Book Week event. Celebrate your freedom to read by making your own banned book button. There will be pre-made designs available, or you can design your own. Button making will be available from 10:30-11:30 a.m. and from 2-4 p.m. Also on Wednesday, our weekly Tween Scene continues from 3:30-5 p.m. Tweens in grades 3-5 who feel a little too old for story time but are too young to be in the Teen Spot can hang out and get a glimpse of what it’s like to be a teen at the library.
