Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! Just a quick reminder we will be closed on Nov. 28th and 29th for the Thanksgiving holiday. I also wanted to remind you that our winter events catalog is now available. Stop by the library and grab yours today to check out all the exciting events we have planned for December through February.
I have some other exciting news because we have a few spots left for our Crafty Crochet Club. A little bit of background. Our Crafty Crochet Club is for tweens and teens in 3rd through 12th grade who want to learn or practice crochet skills by making adorable projects. Each month participants receive a kit with absolutely everything needed to do that month’s project. In September we did a fox, October was a ghost and a bat and November is three gnome brothers, each with a festive hat for fall. This class is intended for anyone from a complete beginner to kids who have been crocheting for years. Our next and last meeting for now is Monday, Nov. 25. If you are interested in signing up yourself or a child, please visit our website greatbendpl.info to register. Spots are extremely limited so don’t delay if you’re interested.
Speaking of Crochet, I have another crochet-related announcement to make. This winter we are aiming to create a community afghan with the help of our patrons. We need everyone’s help to come together as a community one granny square at a time. We are asking for donations of completed granny squares or you are welcome to come into the library and make some here, where we will be providing yarn and crochet hooks for anyone wanting to try their hand at making a square.
New to crocheting or tired of making the same old granny square over and over again? No problem, we will also have patterns that are totally beginner-friendly and some more challenging ones for those who want to try something new or just looking for something fun like a snowflake or flower design. Once completed, we will auction our afghan off with all proceeds benefitting a local charity. A project for the community by the community! We will start putting out supplies and patterns on Dec. 2 but you are welcome to start dropping off squares now. We are asking for standard 5 by 5 granny squares but anything is appreciated.
As for other library events this week, our Tuesday morning story times continue next week, with Baby Bounce Story Time from 9:30-10 a.m. and Early Literacy Story Time from 10:30-11 a.m. Our next check-in for the NaNoWriMo group will be from 5-5:30 p.m. so swing by and share your progress with us and get some help if you are struck with the dreadful writer’s block.
Lastly, Wednesday the 27th will be our final event to close out Dinovember. All ages are welcome to join us for a thrilling adventure of Jurassic proportions as we attempt to help an intrepid group of dinosaur enthusiasts escape an island after they are trapped with dinos in the aftermath of a storm, in the chose-your-own adventure interactive movie Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous.
