SMITH CENTER — David Allen Lloyd, 71, died Sept. 12, 2026, at his home in Smith Center, Kan. He was born March 19, 1955, the son of Vernon and Janie (Durham) Lloyd. David graduated from Dodge City High School in 1974 and later completed officer training. His law enforcement career spanned many years and several counties. He started his career with the sheriff department for Meade County from 1980 to 1981 and later as the undersheriff in Hodgeman County from 1981 until 1994. From 1994 to 1998 he was a sheriff’s officer for Washington County, and then a sergeant for the City of Hoisington from 1998 to 2006, he then moved to Smith Center where he finished his career with Smith County Sheriff’s office retiring in 2016.
David was a motorcycle enthusiast and loved spending time outdoors, whether it was camping, fishing or hunting. He especially liked bow hunting and was a member of the Kansas Bowhunters Association.
He is survived by his three daughters, Tessa Lloyd of Moore, Okla., Amber Lloyd of Great Bend, and April Grandclair of Hoisington; four grandchildren, Tori Lloyd, Trayvon Gordan, and Hadley and Lane Grandclair; brother, Vernon ‘Skip’ (Debbie) Lloyd, Jr. of Spearville; sister, Bev (Denny) Hertel of Dodge City; five nieces and nephews, Shea (Chris) Cook of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Cody (Angela) Lloyd of Borger, Texas, Travis Lloyd (fiancé Navie Morris) of Jacksonville, Fla., and Caleb Hertel and Chance Hertel, both of Dodge City; and many cousins and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant nephew, Cade Hertel.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 18, 2026, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Pastor Victor Link presiding.
