Dr. Richard Allen ‘Dick’ Schaffer

CLAFLIN — Dr. Richard Allen “Dick” Schaffer, 82, died Dec. 13, 2024, at his home. He was born Feb. 2, 1942, in Beloit, Kan., the son of Loren and Marjorie (Allen) Schaffer. Dick graduated from St. John’s Catholic School in Beloit, Kan. He then received his Bachelor of Science from Ft. Hays State College and his medical degree from Kansas University School of Medicine.  

Dick began his medical career in Kansas City and then Lawrence before moving to Claflin in 1993. He then worked for Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend, and later for Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was an exceptional doctor, who was beloved by his patients and coworkers. Dick served on the Claflin Library Board. He loved the outdoors, his life on the farm, photography, and was known to throw a good party.  

In 1967 he married Desi Bravo, to this union three children were born. They later divorced. He then married Anne (Crossette) Winter. She preceded him in death on March 12, 2002.

He is survived by his significant other, Paula Davis of Hoisington; his three children, Mark Schaffer of Kansas City, Mo., Greg Schaffer and wife Lori of Seattle, Wash., and Christina Bravo of Shawnee; three grandchildren, Amy Schaffer, Mateo and Aurora Schaffer; stepson, John Winter of Lawrence; stepdaughters, Rebecca Spriggs of Olathe, and Robin Schneweis of Manhattan; sister-in-law, Joyce Schaffer of Lawrence; nephew, Chad Schaffer of Olathe, and niece, Melanie Krumsick of Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Anne; and a brother, Robert Schaffer. 

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Father Ben Dande presiding. Burial will follow at Bloomingdale Cemetery, rural Claflin, Kan.
