Elbert W. ‘Elbie’ Hapes

Elbert W. “Elbie” Hapes passed away Oct. 28, 2024, at Medicalodges, Great Bend, Kan.  Elbie was born May 8, 1934, in Tina, Mo., to Charles and Ila (Browning) Hapes. Elbie married Jeanette “Jeanie” Wondra April 25, 1981, in Great Bend. She survives.

Elbie graduated from Wheeling High School, Wheeling, Mo., in 1952, and later served in the United Stated Navy aboard the USS Buck from December 1952 to January 1957, earning the rank of SK3. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose and the American Legion Argonne Post 180, both of Great Bend.  

Survivors include Jeanie, of the home; son, Jim Hapes and wife Kelly of Great Bend; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Buena Hake of Smithville, Mo. and a sister-in-law, Beverly Hapes of Chillicothe, Mo. He was preceded in passing by his parents; son, Bob Hapes and wife Debbie; brother, Harold Hapes and wife Helen; brother, Leroy Hapes; brother-in-law, Ron Hake; and grandchildren, Amiee Snow and Levi Hapes.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024, with a Rosary and Vigil at 7 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose Catholic Church with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Cemetery, Odin, Kan., with military honors provide by the American Legion Riders Post 180 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Memorial may be given to Prince of Peace Parish or Kans For Kids, in care of Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Rd., Great Bend, KS  67530.
