Sister Clara Ann Fluech, 81, died Dec. 27, 2025 at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse in Great Bend, Kan. She was born Nov. 24, 1944, in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of Joseph and Agnes (Stenger) Fluech. She entered the Dominican Sisters community in 1964 and pronounced vows in 1967. This year marks her 58th year of religious profession.
In 1970, after receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from St. Mary of the Plains in Dodge City, Sr. Clara Ann began her teaching career. She was an elementary school teacher in Great Bend, Fowler, and Hoisington, Kan. In 1974, she worked as a Pastoral Minister in Goodland, Kan. and then moved to Nigeria in 1975. For nearly two decades, she ministered in Bakori, Gusau and Sokoto, Nigeria, where she enriched countless lives. She particularly treasured her involvement in the formation of women discerning religious life and her service as Diocesan Secretary, Pastoral Coordinator, and Religious Education Coordinator in Sokoto.
In 1996, Sr. Clara Ann moved back to Missouri to care for her aging parents and family members. In 2009, she returned to work in ministry to the elderly, Clinical Pastoral Education, and teaching English as a second language to those who were newcomers to our shores. She retired in 2012.
Sr. Clara loved to sing, to play the guitar, and generally to be around people. She was kind and gentle with a gracious smile for everyone she saw and she loved her family.
Sr. Clara Ann was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Edward. She is survived by her brothers and sister-in-law, Joseph (Becky), John, and James; as well as five nieces and six nephews and her Dominican Sisters of Peace.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 2 and will be held at the Sisters’ Convent. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery.
