Scott City sweeps Larned basketball
BY BUDDY TABLER SCOTT CITY — Larned's girls opened the game on a 9-0 tear, but struggled the rest of the way as Scott City outscored the Indians 36-22 for a 36-31 non-league basketball victory Tuesday. “That is disappointing," said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. "Credit Scott City. They packed it in with their 2-3 zone and we weren’t making shots. We struggled, especially from outside except for a couple of late baskets. Our effort was good but the results weren’t.” Larned (13-6) managed to make 11 of 42 field goals (26%) and converted 5 of 25 3-pointers (20%). Larned's Jadyn Crosby scored 13 points, seven in the fourth quarter as Larned's rally fell short. Lauren Sleder added 11 points. Inaccurate shooting, especially from 3-point range plagued the Indians. Larned claimed an 11-3 first-quarter edge and led 16-13 at halftime. Scott City outscored Larned 17-5 in the third quarter to take a 30-21 lead. Scott City (7-11) made 14 of 39 field goal attempts (35%) and gave Larned a chance with 6 of 19 foul shooting. Lily Lightner was a thorn for the Indians as she scored 14 points while Piper Fox added 11 and nine rebounds. As Scott City’s confidence grew after the first quarter, Larned made 5 of 22 shots in the second half. Meanwhile, Scott City made 9 of 22 in the second half behind the spirited play of Fox. Scott City won the rebounding battle and scored a number of second-chance baskets. SCOTT CITY 57, LARNED 17 — Scott City’s full-court, pressing defense led to ten first-quarter turnovers and the Bluejays went on to a 57-17 ransacking of the Larned Boys Tuesday. Larned (6-13) scored 17 points, none in the final quarter. Larned scored one basket on 12 attempts after halftime. The Indians shot 6 of 24 (25%) and 4 of 12 free throws. Luke Krehbiel and Kylier Greene each scored 5 points. Larned plays Pratt at home Friday. Junior Meza directed the Scott City attack from his point guard position and led the Beavers with 19 points. Brenden Cook scored 10 points. Larned struggled against the aggressive Bluejay defense and allowed a 19-2 run to open the game. The outcome was never in doubt. The Indians stabilized somewhat in the second quarter but trailed, 31-12 at halftime. The ball-hawking Scott City defense turned turnovers into points as coach Brian Gentry rotated nine players throughout the first half using man-to-man and a 1-3-1 zone defense to play takeaway from the Indians. “Their defensive pressure got us rattled," said Larned coach Luke Steinlage. "We made poor decisions which led to turnovers and easy baskets. They're a quick team and we did not respond well. Playing at that speed is not our strong point. They turned us over a lot.” Larned 11 5 5 10 — 31 Scott City 3 10 17 6 — 36 LARNED (13-6)—Crosby 11, Sleder 11, Wachs 3, Brooke Simmons 3, Upson 2, Totals 11-42 (5-25) 4-7 31 SCOTT CITY (7-11) Lightner 14, Fox 11, Hineman 3, Campbel 3, Castillo 3, Felker 1, Irvin 1; Totals 14-39 (2) 6-19 36 Larned 4 8 5 0 — 17 Scott City 19 12 22 4 — 57 LARNED (6-13)—Greene 5, Krehbiel 5, Pinkston 4, Gonzalez 3; Totals 6-24 (1) 4-12 17 SCOTT CITY (10-8)—Meza 19, Cook 10, Radke 9, Irvin 5, Metzger 5, Gssman 2, Herosille 2, Stockton 2
