BCC women snap skid with 69-66 win over Coffeyville

The schedule to start Jayhawk Conference play was not kind to the Barton women’s basketball team.
After getting unbeaten Cowley to start the conference slate, Barton got 1-loss Coffeyville in the follow-up contest.
Throw in the fact the Cougars were riding their longest losing streak in four years after the loss to Cowley and prospects weren’t good for a win Wednesday night at the Barton Gym.
That losing streak, though, would not reach five.
The Cougars led most of the way, nearly the entire second half and all of the fourth quarter on the way to a 69-66 Jayhawk win.
“It was a good night for us,” Coach Alan Clark said. “We improved on some things we needed to – mainly cutting down on our turnovers.
“But we really needed to get a win and we did that.”
Barton is now 1-1 in the Jayhawk and 5-6 overall. Coffeyville is 1-2 and 11-2.
The first half saw the two teams battle back-and-forth with neither getting a lead of more than three points the first 20 minutes of play.
The teams went to the locker room with the Cougars holding a 34-32 lead.
Barton built a 4-point lead in the opening stages of the third quarter when Vanessa Oduah scored just 20 seconds in for a 36-32 lead. But the Cougars would score just one more point over the next five minutes as the Red Ravens took a 40-37 lead midway through the quarter.
Hannah Valentine started a Cougar run of their own with a jumper at the 4:40 mark. Richelle Turney added a jumper and a trey with the 3-pointer giving the Cougars their biggest lead of the night at 45-40 iwth 1:26 left in the third.
By the end of the third period, Barton had the same 2-point lead it had at half, this time 47-45.
Barton held Coffeyville at bay the first four minutes of the fourth period. The Cougars would extend the lead to three and then Red Ravens would cut it to one.
Finally, with just less than six minutes to play, the Cougars got that lead to five when Kolby Davis found Turney for a fast-break layup and a 55-50 led.
Queen Ulabo made it a 63-57 game with just 2:58 to play on a 3-point play. Barton went the next 2:25 scoring just one point but clung to a 64-59 lead until Julia Calafell made things interesting.
Calafell knocked down a trey with 33 seconds left to make it a 64-62 game.
The final seconds became a matter of hitting free throws for the Cougars. Tiffany Dortland did just that with 20 seconds left, knocking down a pair for a 66-62 lead.
With 15 seconds left, it was Turney’s turn at the charity stripe. The sophomore did her part as well, hitting a pair for a 68-64 lead.
Finally, with just 2.8 seconds left, Davis got her shot at the line. The Ellsworth native hit 1-of-2 to secure the 69-66 win.
Oduah matched her career-high with 18 points to go with nine rebounds and four steals from her point guard spot. It was the freshman from Nigeria’s fourth straight game of setting or matching a career-high.
“She is so talented,” Coach Clark said of Oduah. “She is getting more comfortable and has great things in front of her.”
Hannah Valentine had a big first half and ended with 15 points and six rebounds. Turney scored 10, all in the second half.
Alana Kramer was the lone Red Raven in double figures with 13.
Barton will hit the road for the first time in Jayhawk play Saturday with a trip to Independence as the Cougars work their way through the East half of the conference. Tip is set for 4 pm.
