No. 19 ranked Hutchinson Community College roared past the Barton Cougar women 65–42 in Wednesday's Jayhawk Conference basketball action.
The Cougars (3-8, 1-4 Jayhawk) play Pratt Saturday at home while Hutchinson (9–2, 4-1 Jayhawk) moves into third place.
Barton's Regina Donanu scored 12 points with a trio of assists as the Cougars shot 27%. Kodi Greer chipped in nine points on 3-of-6 shooting from deep. Mary Akinde contributed eight points and five rebounds. Bryndal Moody chipped in six points off the bench.
Barton's 21 giveaways gift wrapped a 25–0 Hutchinson advantage in points off turnovers. The Blue Dragons controlled the paint with an 18-point edge inside despite a near-even rebounding battle.
Hutchinson's Whitney Brown's delivered 16 points, seven assists, and four steals. Kaia Smith fueled a 24-point bench scoring advantage with a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Hutchinson used a pair of early bursts and a disciplined half-court attack to build a 20–10 lead after one, stretching the margin to 38–19 by halftime behind six first-half three-pointers.
Barton Greer hit a trio of triples, but the Blue Dragons countered with timely baskets and a decisive advantage in the paint to keep the Cougars at arm's length.
Hutchinson jumped ahead 7–0. Moody hit a 3-pointer followed by Donanu, Aliana Eck and Akinde for a 12-10 score. The Dragons closed the quarter 8-0 for a 20-10 lead.
Barton drew back within single digits on an Eva Clements jumper and Donanu's free throws. Hutchinson responded with an 11–0 for a 38–19 lead at halftime.
Greer converted a pair of 3-pointers, but Hutchinson countered with eight straight points for a 26-point lead. Akinde steadied the Cougars with four straight points, and Greer's third triple of the frame trimmed the margin to 55–34 heading to the fourth.
