Cougars upset Cowley at Region 6 baseball, 9-8

WICHITA – Barton Community College Cougar Owen Clyde is officially riding a postseason hot streak at Wichita State. 

For the second consecutive day, Owen Clyne delivered the big hit with a game-winning 2-out single to shock No. 19 ranked Cowley College 9-8 in Thursday's Region 6 second round at the Region 6 baseball tournament.

The Cougars were down to their final strike when Cole Schieffer and sparkplug Robby Bolin delivered 2-out singles. Clyne drilled the game-winning single on an 0-2 count.

"It's high-level baseball," said Barton coach Brett Biggs. "Credit to Owen, he took a good swing at it. We kept battling."

Barton's Kyler Horsman (2-1) struck out the final batter to end two innings of relief. Horsman delivered three hits with a pair of RBIs.

"Kyler has been good," Biggs said.

Barton (41-19) rides an 8-game winning streak against No. 1 Johnson County in Friday's 5 p.m. winners bracket final.

The Cougars were shut out for five innings. Ayden Hadley, Hank Orr and Bolin delivered RBIs in the sixth and Schieffer drilled a 2-run single for a 5-3 lead.

Kyler Horsman's 2-run eighth-inning single drove in Clyne and Jarron Cotton for a 7-4 lead.

Cowley answered with a 4-run eighth inning for a 8-7 lead on J McNealy's single.

Barton outhit Cowley 14-9, getting hits from eight of the nine in the lineup.

Clyne and Schieffer joined Horsman to lead Barton's RBI production each knocking in a pair with three others adding one brought home.

Starting pitcher Aidan Sowers grinded out four innings with three hits, three runs, walking three and fanning one. Anthony Treto worked the next 3.0-innings scattering two hits, two runs with two walks and pair of strikeouts.

JOHNSON 8, COUGARS 5 (9TH) – Barton's Robby Bolin broke the Cougars' single-season hit record with a third-inning single for his 101st hit that snapped Michael Sinks' record of 100 in 2017.

The Cougars trailed 8-0 when they busted loose for a 5-run seventh inning. Cole Scheiffer's single scored Aiden Hadley and Cesar Gomez. Superstar Kyler Horsman doubled home Schieffer, Bolin and Jaron Cotton after both runners walked.

Ryker Edwards drilled a 3-run home for an 8-0 lead as the Cavaliers ripped five extra-base hits. Jake McClure singled home Jordan Black and McClure scored on a Dagan Brewer third-inning sacrifice fly. Cal Kilgore scored on Black's third-inning double. 

Brewer and Miken Miller delivered RBIs in a 5-run fifth inning prior to Edwards' 3-run blast off reliever Bradley Feezer.

HUTCHINSON 9, KANSAS CITY 8 – Hutchinson's Blake Bradford doubled home Cooper Wessland with the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

COWLEY 17, BUTLER 16 – Cowley's Dane Harvey and Jadyn McNealy delivered eighth-inning RBIs as the Tigers outlasted Butler 17-16 in a wild 3-hour affair.
