NEWTON — Great Bend Bat Cat T.J. Shaw from Henderson, Nev. ignited a career-best night with a pair of homers and seven runs batted home in a dominating 22-6 Jayhawk Collegiate League baseball victory over the Newton Rebels.
Shaw (.362, 15 RBI) drilled a grand-slam sixth-inning homer and blasted a 2-run fifth-inning homer. Hoisington's Tony Moore (.271, 8 RBI) enjoyed a season-best performance with a 2-run fourth-inning homer and a bases-loaded triple for five RBI.
Newton's pitching had no answers for the Bat Cats offense, yielding 21 earned runs, 16 hits and 10 walks. Newton's pitching yielded five walks, a hit batter and committed an error in a 9-run Bat Cats seventh inning.
The Bat Cats scored in six of seven innings. Topeka's Deacon Pomeroy ripped his third homer. Also delivering one RBI were Hoisington's Lane French, Luke Nohinek (.438), Caleb Cowan and Carson Umphres.
Bat Cats pitcher Eli Lang (2-1. 3.40 ERA) yielded three earned runs with four strikeouts.
The Bat Cats (12-7, 11-5 Jayhawk) remain 11/2 games behind Jayhawk leader Hutchinson (13-4 Jayhawk) while Newton drops to 4-15, 4-14 Jayhawk. Newton visits Great Bend Saturday.
Newton's Peoples hit a seventh-inning homer. Hidaka Tomohaku drove home two runs with two hits. Jaylon Humbles and Kasey Lowe each drove home one run.
