Great Bend's Kyle Walker delivered the game-winning single as the Bat Cats outlasted the Kingman Islanders 6-5 in Thursday's Jayhawk Collegiate League baseball showdown.

Joey Marker and Logan Renken singled and Carson Umphres moved the runners up on sacrifice bunt. After Peanut Brazzle walked, Barton Cougar standout Walker ripped a 3-2 pitch from Karston Wall for the game-winner.

"I was looking to swing at something in the zone," said Walker, a Topeka Washburn graduate. "I was trying to get something to the outfield, a pitch I could handle."

Kingman rallied for a 5-5 ninth-inning tie. Owen Schmidt doubled off Tyler Stuhlsatz to plate Hayden Oviatt, who reached second base on an error. Stuhlsatz yielded no earned runs in 31/3 innings. Reliever Jacob Field (1-0) earned the victory by striking out Owen Schmidt and retiring Corey Reece on a groundout to strand Schmidt at second base. 

The Bat Cats roared to a 4-0 lead. Brazzle scored on Deacon Pomeroy's first-inning groundout. Umphres scored on a passed ball after he doubled home Andrugh Yee and Marker for a 4-0 lead.

Kingman roughed up starter Tyler Clementz for a 4-run fifth inning. Mac Bowie homered. Caiden Beavers singled home Landon Parks. Schmidt singled home Beavers. Oviatt scored on Garryn Plummer's sacrifice fly for  4-4 tie.

Renken doubled and scored on a Brazzle seventh-inning sacrifice fly for a 5-4 lead off Wall.

The Bat Cats (11-7, 10-5 Jayhawk) travel to Newton (4-14, 4-13 Jayhawk) Friday before Saturday's rematch at Great Bend.
