Indians, Cardinals qualify for state track

SCOTT CITY — Hoisington's Marley Bittel captured the 100 meters (12.32) and 200 meters (26.0) and qualified in fourth in the 400 (1:01.9) at the 3A Scott City track regional to qualify for the 3A state track meet. Bittel placed runner-up in the 100 and sixth in the 200 last year behind Hesston 3A state champion Ashley Lehman.

Larned and Hoisington combined for 11 additional state qualifiers when compared to other 3A regionals.

The Cardinals' 400-meter girls relay (50.35) qualified with Reese Merlau, Kinley Wilkens, Addison Hanzlick and Bittel. Triple jumper Wilkens (34-4) qualified.

Larned's runner-up state long jumper Kaylee Hagerman qualified in the long jump (16-113/4) and the 100 meters (12.55). Hagerman has placed at state in the triple jump and 200 meters. Larned captured the 400-meter relay (49.68) with Teagan Walker, Cara Herbert, Taeten Reynolds and Hagerman. 

Larned's Cara Herbert qualified for state in the 100-meter hurdles (15.54) and 300-meter hurdles (47.87) and Walker made the 200 meters (26.57). Shot putter Cammy Upson (34-7) qualified.

BOYS DIVISION — Hoisington's boys qualified for state track in seven events. Double qualifier Brier Thompson made it in the 100 meters (11.04) along with the third-place 400-meter relay (43.32) with Courtney Bryant, Mason Martin and Jason Robinson.

Long jumper Martin edged teammate Jason Robinson on a tiebreaker, but both qualified at 21-43/4. Pole vaulter Taylen Morales (13-6) placed third after placing sixth in 3A last year. Cardinal Joseph Hekele (13-0) also qualified. The state's elite 3A shot put qualified sixth-place Leyton Hoffman (52-03/4), along with discus (159-1). High jumper Martin (5-10) qualified on a tiebreaker.
