Great Bend rebounded from a high-level learning experience at Dodge City to dominate defending Western Athletic Conference softball champion Hays High 10-0 Tuesday.
Panther pitcher Chayla Prendergast spun a 2-hit shutout with three strikeouts at the Great Bend Sports Complex.
Great Bend (13-4, 7-0 WAC) leads Hays (9-5, 4-2 WAC) by 21/2 games heading to Hays for Thursday's twin bill.
The Panthers feature first-team All-WAC shortstop Kya Behr and rightfielder DeShawnna Bryant and second-team All-WAC centerfielder Camdyn Post, catcher Kamryn Koelsch and pitcher Braelyn Turner.
Behr doubled three times and drove home five runs.
The Panthers jumped all over Hays starter Jaylee Summers (3-2) for seven runs. Behr doubled home Katherine Mazouch and Behr scored on Bryant's single for a 2-0 lead.
Behr singled in Mazouch after a double to ignite a 3-run third inning. Alyssa McCauley doubled home Behr and Bryant for a 5-0 lead. Denver Ringo scored on Post's bunt. Turner scored on Behr's double for a 7-0 lead.
The Panthers finished off the 6-inning affair with a 3-run inning. Mazouch singled home Prendergast and Behr's third double scored Mazouch and Post for the run-rule victory.
