LARNED 40, HAYS TMP 37 -- The Larned Lady Indians used stellar defense to shut down TMP-Marian, 40-37.

Both teams struggled with their shooting but Larned won the turnover battle to lead 7-6 at the first quarter stop and 15-10 at halftime. The Lady Monarchs were able to pull even at 23-23 at the end of three quarters but Larned opened a seven-point margin midway of the fourth quarter.

TMP-Marian had to begin fouling with three minutes left and the strategy nearly worked as Larned missed three free throws and the Lady Monarchs connected on a couple of three-point plays, one the old fashioned way. With just 9.6 remaining and Larned up 38-37, Larned’s Jadyn Crosby was fouled. She made both free throws and Larned’s Cassidy Wachs stole the ball from TMP as they were setting up for a final shot and the game was over, 40-37.

TMP-Marian made 12 of 35 shots for 35% and converted 8 of 12 free throws. Gracyn Schippers led the Monarchs with 13 points while Brooke Koenigsman added 11 points as their record dropped to 7-6.

Larned made 15 of 43 from the field (37%) and  7 of 12 from the charity stripe. Brooke Simmons led Larned with 13 points while Jadyn Crosby added 10. Karley Lemuz scored 6, Cassidy Wachs, Cammy Upson, Lauren Sleder and Taeten Reynolds each scored 2.

HAYS TMP 46, LARNED 33 On Legacy night here Friday the TMP boys wore jerseys honoring days of old with Cadets imprinted on the back and SJMA on the front. They played like some of the TMP teams of the past as they raced past Larned 46-33.

A sticky defense kept Larned’s offense bottled up most of the night as TMP led 9-8 at the end of the first quarter and pulled ahead for a 23-15 halftime lead behind some sharp outside shooting as the Monarchs made 4 of 11 3-point shots. Larned kept it close in the third quarter, trailing only 31-25 but could never get closer.

For the game TMP took 24 3-point shots and made 8 of them to keep Larned off balance. More importantly, their speed led them to out-rebound Larned and to win the turnover battle 12-20. TMP turned a number of Larned turnovers into breakaway points as they built their fourth quarter lead to as many as 17 points before Larned rallied late.

It was a cold shooting night for both teams as TMP made 16 of 44 for 36%. They converted 5 of 8 free throw attempts. Ty Schmeidler led the Monarchs in scoring with 13 points while Jacob Seib added 11 and Caden Dinkel 9 as they improved their season record to 6-7.

Larned made 12 of 32 field goal attempts for 34% and  4 of 10 from the charity stripe. Points were hard to come by for the Indians. Kylier Greene led Larned with 11 points while Andres Martinez, shaking off an earlier injury came back to score 10. Tristan Regan scored 6, Luke Krehbiel 4, and Carson Shaver 2.
