ST. JOHN GIRLS 38, STAFFORD 20

ST. JOHN – St. John's girls offset a lack of practice time with a solid 38-20 non-league basketball victory over Stafford. Heidi Fisher scored eight points with seven rebounds, seven steals and five assists. Darby Smith scored nine points. Payton Meyer and Kaylynn Claussen each grabbed eight rebounds.

"I was pleased with the rebounding of guards Payton Meyer and Heidi Fisher," said St. John coach Danny Smith. "Zayreli Reyes had several nice drives to the basket for scores. We played hard as a team, but need to get better in a hurry. We shot 29% and missed 40 shots, many of them right at the basket."

The Tigers had missed practice time due to numbers, injuries and illnesses.

"This was the first full-court basketball we've been able to play since the season began," Smith said. "We've been practicing with four-to-six healthy players. It's difficult to improve when you're struggling to stay healthy. We weren't in the shape we want to be in. This probably had something to do with our shooting struggles. We will get there."

St. John (1-0) plays No. 2 ranked Spearville Monday at Larned's Gene Keady Classic.

"Playing a better team will make us play much better and we will," Smith said. "We're happy to be back in the gym playing games.
