HOISINGTON –Hoisington's Holt Hanzlick scored three second-half touchdowns to spark the No. 2-ranked Cardinals past Phillipsburg 42-21 in 2A, District 8. Hoisington (4-0, 1-0 District) plays at Minneapolis (2-2, 1-0) next week.

The Cardinals dominated the ballgame to outscore the Panthers 36-0 after trailing 21-6. After the Panthers scored two touchdowns for a 14-0 lead. Panther quarterback Trey Sides directed two flawless scoring drives. Devin Johnson scored on a 3-yard run and Kagen Keeten scored on a 20-yard reception.

"We didn't come ready to play. Early on, they won the battle up front. They punched us in the mouth," said Hoisington coach Zach Baird. "Offensively, we were fine. We needed to quit turning the ball over. Offensively, we can be pretty good. We hang out hat on blocking, effort and good technique."

Phillipsburg was poised for a 21-0 lead with first-and-goal. But Cardinal Hunter Morris made a key tackle on a pass play and Holt Hanzlick and Wyatt Wikum combined for a fourth-down, game-saving sack on Sides at the 7-yard line.

"That was a big defensive series, but we still had a long ways to go," Baird said. " I was proud of our guys."

Hoisington responded with a clutch 93-yard scoring drive off Chase Robinson's 63-yard scoring strike from quarterback Mason Haxton. Late in the game Haxton connected with Hunter Morris on a crucial 44-yard pass play.

"Mason was excellent tonight," Baird said. "That was something we could take advantage of. When things were bad, Mason continued to keep battling and kept guys going."

Phillipsburg's Clint Gower scored on a 1-yard run countered by Cole Steinert's 8-yard touchdown for a Panther 21-14 halftime lead.

Hanzlick scored on runs of 6, 19 and 41 runs and Steinert added a 20-yard touchdown run for a dominating second-half.

The Cardinals rushed for 402 yards behind C Logan Philbern, RG Cole Gilliland, RT Legend Robinson, LG Nolan Philbern, LT Braden Mooney and TEs Joshua Blal, Holt Hanzlick and Cole Steinert. Hanzlick gained 154 yards and Joshua Ball added 117 yards.

"We're excited about the way our offensive line has progressed," Baird said.

After trailing 21-14, the Cardinals dominated the second half 28-0. The Panthers gained 57 yards after halftime with the Cardinals making defensive adjustments against Sides.

"Defensively, we got things figured out," Baird said. "We got proper rush lanes to keep Sides from hurting us. We figured it out as we went along."
