The Hoisington defense tackles a Hesston ball carrier Friday.

HOISINGTON 39, HESSTON 7

Hoisington coach Zach Baird can check another goal off his list – beat Hesston. The Cardinals roared past Hesston 39-7 behind big plays from the offense and defense.

The Cardinals scored on their first offensive drive and converted a takeaway for a quick 2-score lead. Mason Alderdice scored on 12- and 15-yard runs. After Alderdice’s first touchdown, Taylen Morales scored on an 85-yard return of a Hesston fumble for a 14-0 lead.

“Taylen’s play changed the ballgame,” Baird said. “Taylen made a great heads-up play. He realizes he's out in the open and scoops and scores it.”

The Cardinals (1-0) scored on offense and defense to start the ballgame.

"It was a good clean start for us. We started playing physical and kept the football," Baird said. "“I was proud of the effort. It’s good to get that first win under our belt.”

Quarterback Tony Moore completed a 69-yard touchdown pass to Jason Robinson and threw for 187 yards. Mason Martin caught a 12-yard touchdown pass. Teron Kraft scored on a 1-yard run.

"We've got offensive weapons and we used them," Baird said. "We spread the football around."

The defensive front of Caiden Hoffman, Caleb Birzer and Brayden Stevenson was backed by cornerbacks Mason Alderdice and Mason Martin, linebackers Teron Kraft and Ian Smith and safeties Moore and Robinson.
