Cardinals’ pressure overwhelms Indians

BY BUDDY TABLER

LARNED – The Hoisington Lady Cardinals used stifling fullcourt defense to frustrate Larned into 23 first-half turnovers and the result was a resounding 60-18 victory Tuesday.

Hoisington made 21 of 46 field goal attempts for 46% and were led in scoring by Keeley Wolf’s 14 points. Addy Mason added 11 and the Lady Cardinals got more balanced scoring from Suzanna Schneider and Macy Hanzlick’s eight apiece. Hoisington (8-12) will play Scott City in 3A substate play Monday.

Hoisington jumped out to an 18-6 first quarter edge and kept their foot on the gas pedal as they raced to a halftime advantage of 31-10. Hoisington dominated the offensive rebounds and got a lot of second-chance baskets as they posted almost twice as many basket attempts as Larned.

Larned was missing two of their best ballhandlers due to injuries and they had a lot of difficulty trying to get the ball up the court and into an offense against the pressing Cardinals as the turnovers piled up.

“Once again, we had trouble against the press,” said Larned coach Ashley Crosby. “Too many turnovers. We were short handed but, hey, Hoisington is a good team. I know they came into this game with only 7 wins but they are good. That’s what life is like in the Central Kansas League. It’s tough to get wins!”

Hoisington was strong at the free throw line as they got 19 attempts, making 12 of them. Larned did not shoot a single free throw. Hoisington outscored the Lady Indians 19-5 in the third quarter, gaining a 50-15 edge.

Larned (2-17) made 8 field goals in 27 attempts for 29%. Cadee Upson led the Lady Indians with six points while Liz Herrera posted five and Reagan Krehbiel three. Larned travel to Hugoton to play the top-seeded Lady Eagles Monday or Tuesday.
