Cardinals win showdown, earn rematch

LYONS — The Hoisington/Central Plains baseball team earned a rematch against Lyons/Sterling with a thrilling 4-3 victory Tuesday that clinched the fifth seed in the 4A West.

Brodie Crites slid home with the game-winning run on Marcus Ingram's seventh-inning double off reliever Easton Diasio after Lyons starter Logan Isaac hit the 105-pitch count.

The Cardinals (15-6) would've dropped to the seventh 4A West seed with a loss. The Cardinals get a rematch against Lyons/Sterling (13-10) at next week's Clay Center baseball regional. The Cardinals are riding a 7-game winning streak.

"We get to go to Clay Center next week," said Cardinal coach Eric Steiner. "It's a nice way to end the regular season."

Cardinal starter Lane French (5-1) recorded seven strikeouts while yielding one earned run in a 104-pitch outing.

Brody Corbett scored on French's first-inning double for a 1-0 lead. Deacon Showalter singled in Isaac for a 1-1 tie. Blake Smith and Ethan Luck scored on a third-inning error.

Kaidenn Chambers doubled home Teron Kraft and Chambers scored on a Kaydin Umphrey sixth-inning double for a 3-3 tie.

The Cardinals gained a bonus victory that proved critical against Central Kansas League champion PraCardinal starter Lane French (5-2) recorded seven strikeouts while yielding one earned run in a 104-pitch outing.
