ELLINWOOD GIRLS 51, ST. JOHN 38 — The No. 1 ranked 2A Ellinwood girls edged past St. John 51-38 in Tuesday's Central Prairie League basketball showdown to stay unbeaten.

Ellinwood's Brynn Widener and Julia Schlessiger each scored 13 points and Eleanor Joiner scored 10 points off the bench. The Eagles converted six 3-pointers.

St. John's standout Regan Bonner scored 22 points.

Ellinwood's varsity (9-0, 3-0 CPL) dropped the Tigers to 4-6, 1-1 CPL.

Ellinwood traveled to St. John and delivered a statement night, sweeping varsity and junior varsity levels, showing poise, depth, and control in a tough road environment. The JV squad dominated from the start. The varsity Eagles controlled tempo and executed with confidence.

“To go into St. John’s gym and dominate in the JV game while controlling the varsity tempo and earning two wins is something we have not done," said Ellinwood coach Greg Maxwell. "This was another step towards our bigger goals of winning the CPL and earning a trip to the 2A state tournament. The girls are working hard, playing selflessly and understanding their roles while contributing to our team’s success.”

With momentum building, records falling, and championship goals clearly in sight, this group continues to prove that hard work, unselfish play, and belief are a powerful combination.

The Eagles broke a school record Friday with a 95-24 victory over Chase to break the prior record of 81 points against Kinsley (1986), Wichita Northfield (2013) and Canton-Galva (2015), according to Ellinwood sports historian Larry Dress.
