Ellinwood's Drew Heinz earns runner-up medal
Drew Heinz

EMPORIA – Ellinwood’s Drew Heinz birdied Nos. 6 and 9 and shot 4-over-par 75 to finish as 2A state golf runner-up after Tuesday's scheduled round was rained out at Emporia Golf Course. Heinz placed 10th (157, 78-79) in last year's 2A tournament at Salina.

The Eagles (363) won the tiebreaker for sixth place. Ellinwood counted scores by 10th-place medalist Mason Moore (81), Braden Lewis (100), Caden Rowan (107) and Trey Schofield (107). Conditions were ideal with light winds and a high of 67 degrees.

"Our goal was to make it the second day, so we're excited and proud of the kids competing today," said Ellinwood coach Greg Maxwell. "They learned how to handle the pressure of playing at the state level. Ellinwood tied with Pittsburg Colgan, but won the tiebreaker with our fifth-place score."

Hoxie's Ashton Dowell (74) earned medalist honors with a pair of birdies. Salina Sacred Heart (318) edged Hoxie (319) for the Knights' seventh consecutive state championship.
