Watkins places 4th nationally

HUMBLE, Texas — Great Bend Panther sophomore Grant Watkins (5,451 points) placed fourth nationally in the AAU Track Nationals decathlon for 15-16 year old athletes.

Watkins earned career-best or season bests in the 400 meters (53.83), shot put (35-101/2), discus (120-2), javelin (106-6), long jump (18-1) and high jump (6-03/4) in the 10-event challenge.

Watkins' other performances were 100 (12.25), 110-meter hurdles (16.64), pole vault (10-113/4) and 1,500 meters (no time recorded).

Watkins qualified for AAU Nationals with 5,067 points.

Pennsylvania's Isaiah Bland (6,004) placed first nationally.
