HOISINGTON – The Hoisington girls captured the 4-1A regional title behind four state-ranked runners-up – No. 6 ranked Kiana Grandclair (33-4, 120); No. 3 Daijah Jones (36-4, 130); No. 5 Tally Wikum (26-6, 140) and No. 5 Lyrica Orosco (24-7, 145).
The Cardinals qualified six wrestlers for the 4-1A state tournament at Salina. The No. 10 ranked Cardinals scored 107.5 points to place first ahead of Oakley (78).The girls qualify for the 4-1A state meet Feb. 22-23 at Salina.
In regional championship matches, Stockton’s No. 4 Ashlyn Hahn pinned Grandclair (3:12); Colby’s No. 5 Amanda Jaeger defeated Jones, 13-1; Ellis’ Kaydawn Haag defeated Wikum, 7-1; and Goodland’s No.3 Destiny Gonzalez defeated Orosco, 5-4.
Amerine Hinz (13-11, 235) placed third with a pin over Norton’s Emma Bellaau (0:26). Bailey George (4-21, 100) placed fourth with a loss to Ell-Saline’s Erica Will (2:44).
“We have a group of girls going to the state meet that have very good shots at bringing home hardware. We're proud to be regional champion in a very tournament," said Hoisington coach Dan Schmidt. "he girls have been outstanding all year, and deserved to win. We did not wrestle our best, the result of many being underclassman in an event that's difficult to place at. I look forward to what they will do in the future."
Hoisington's Paige Schwartz (115), Lillian Gradig (125), Clair Birzer (135), Zayda Urban (170) and Yessica Esquivel (190) were one win away from qualifying for the state meet.
Larned’s Liliana McKenna (23-14, 110) placed runner-up with a loss to Oakley’s No. 6 Citori Bosserman (5:47). Reese Watkins (20-14, 120) finished third with a 3-0 victory over Oakley’s Mikayla Cain.
