MANHATTAN — No. 1 seed Humboldt escaped a first-inning jam and escaped with a hard-fought 4-1 victory over Hoisington/Central Plains in the 4A state baseball tournament.

The Cardinals had Humboldt ace Trey Sommer (12-0) on the ropes with two walks and a single. Tony Moore scored on a passed ball. But Humboldt catcher Jacob Harrington threw out Lane French on an attempted steal.

The Cubs scored twice on Trey Sommer's first-inning homer after Sam Hull reached on an error. Mason Sterling's single scored Blake Ellis and Colden Cook after the Cubs had two batters hit by a pitch with a walk off Cardinal starter Leyton Haxton (2-3). Chase Steinert and Marcus Ingram singled for the Cardinals.

Cardinal reliever Tony Moore was brilliant with three innings of shutout ball. The Cardinals (15-8) lost for the sixth time in the first round of the state baseball tournament.
