LARNED – It required overtime for either team to get separation but the Larned boys finally prevailed as they upset No. 2-ranked 3A Haven 61-55 Tuesday.

In regulation Larned’s Chance Sanger was fouled with 12.9 seconds remaining and the Indians trailing 51-50. He made the first free throw but missed the second. Haven missed a last-second desperation shot.
In overtime Larned led most of the time, but Haven kept battling back. Larned forged a 58-54 lead with 1:12 left but missed four straight free throws. Sanger made two free throws with 21.8 seconds remaining in overtime to put the Indians up by five.

Sanger led Larned with 24 points while Brock Skelton and Layton Crosby added 12 apiece. Larned (12-3, 3-2 CKL) will host Hillsboro Friday for Winter Royalty night at Larned.

“It was a typical Central Kansas League game,” said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. “There are so many good teams. It ‘s a battle every night. I was pleased with my team, especially in overtime as Mason Perez fouled out and Brock Skelton went down with an injury. Our bench came through. It was a great team win over a very good Haven team.”
It was a close game throughout as Larned’s biggest lead was 8 points and Haven’s biggest was 6.

Larned led 16-13 at the first quarter break and the two teams battled to a 24-24 standoff at halftime, keyed by mini-runs by both ball clubs. Haven shot 52%l from the field in the first half to only 36% for Larned but the Indian defense was forcing Haven into 12 first half turnovers.
Haven grabbed a slim 40-38 lead after three quarters on the hot three-point shooting of Zane Jacques, setting the stage for the frenetic fourth quarter and overtime.

Haven (14-2, 3-2 CKL) shot 21 of 40 from the field for 52% and 7 of 14 from the free throw line. Wyatt Carmichael led the Wildcats with 19 points while Zane Jacques added 17. Mario Quintero and Darby Roper had 9 apiece.
Improved shooting in the second half resulted in the Indians making 22 of 48 field goals and 8 of 15 free throws. They made nine 3-point baskets.
