Monarchs overwhelm Bat Cats

HUTCHINSON – For 31/2 innings, the Great Bend Bat Cats played like the best baseball team in the Sunflower Collegiate League.

The minute the Bat Cats stopped playing quality baseball, Tuesday’s ballgame was over.

The Hutchinson Monarchs took advantage of critical Bat Cats mistakes to roar to a 13-6 victory Tuesday. The Monarchs (14-5) can tie the Bat Cats (19-4, 15-4) for second place with a victory Wednesday at Hobart-Detter Field. The Cheney Diamond Dawgs (16-3) take over first place in the Sunflower Collegiate League.

Bat Cat Alex Rodgers drilled a leadoff homer. The Bat Cats led 4-0 after Kyle Gates scored on an error, Rodgers scored on a balk and Riley Silva scored on a Kyle Gates single.

Hunter Autrey started the Monarchs’ rally with a 2-run third-inning double for a 4-2 score.

The Bat Cats’ offense was hitless after Adam Mustow’s fourth-inning homer for a 5-2 lead. The next 11 batters were retired in order when Rodgers was a hit by a pitch. The Bat Cats’ final eighth-inning run was a gift when Connor Allen scored on an eighth-inning error.

Great Bend’s defense, spectacular all summer, collapsed along with erratic Bat Cats pitching.

Every break swung Hutchinson’s way.

An apparent missed foul ball off the bat of Jacob Wiltshire led to a 3-run fourth inning. Wiltshire was awarded first base despite the sound of a baseball hitting a bat on an inside pitch by Brayden Tower. Two runs scored when second baseman Brady Kreutzer was unable to play a play on Lane Brewster’s hard-hit grounder. Wiltshire scored on a Sawyer Thornhill sacrifice fly for a 5-5 tie.

Great Bend nearly escaped with a 5-5 tie after a bases-loaded threat in the fifth inning.

Great Bend catcher Connor Allen threw a potential double-play groundball down the right field line. The inning opened with two hit batters and a fielding error. Cade Clemons scored an error, Karson Coffee on a sacrifice fly and Austin Schneider on a wild pitch for an 8-5 lead. Hutchinson scored three runs on no hits.

The Monarchs scored five runs against Bat Cat reliever Tyrus Riley. Nixon Brannan doubled home Bryce Logan in the sixth inning. Logan’s 2-run single scored Coffee and Schneider. Lane Brewster bunted for a single and scored on Thornhill’s sacrifice fly. Brannan scored on Coffee’s eighth-inning sacrifice fly.
