MACKSVILLE 48, CENTRAL PLAINS 42 (1ST) — Macksville's dazzling Diego Esparza scored 21 points to spark the Mustangs past Central Prairie League rival Central Plains 48-42 for the championship of the Midwinter Basketball Classic.

The Oilers closed within three points when Brodie Crites converted three consecutive baskets and Camden Stiles hit a 3-pointer. Rylan Siemsen missed a pair of potential tying 3-pointers in the final minute. Esparza scored eight fourth-quarter points and three clinching free throws to preserve the victory. 

Central Plains' Aiden Hekele scored 15 points and Crites added 10 points.

The Mustangs converted seven 3-pointers to outscore the Oilers 21-12.

Martin stole the basketball on back-to-back plays from Rashawn Walker, scored and passed to Tristan Regan for the game-deciding 3-point play for a 34-31 lead. Alex King's basket drew the Panthers within 34-33, but he missed the tying free throw.

Carson Shaver scored 10 points and Tristan Regan added nine points.

Nickerson's Rashawn Walker scored seven points.
