Esparza's basket gave the Mustangs a 48-47 lead. Landon Daniels' rebound basket gave the Oilers a 49-48 lead. Stiles converted two free throws after a Crites steal for  51-48 lead. Adams scored, but Stiles converted two more free throws for  53-50 margin.

The Oilers matched up with Esparza out of an aggressive zone defense.

"We played a 2-3 zone and tried to double Esparza out of it," said Oiler coach Michael Ryan. "Our goal was to shut down the other guys. He still got to the rim. He's the real deal."
